Dr. Athir Morad is an assistant professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine and neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Morad was a Howard Hughes undergraduate research scholar at Georgetown University and the National Institutes of Health. He earned his M.D. from the University of Virginia and completed residencies in medicine at Inova Fairfax Hospital and in anesthesiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He performed a fellowship in neurocritical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Morad joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2008.

His research focuses on the perioperative management of pain for patients undergoing neurosurgery. He has completed two randomized controlled trials on the efficacy of patient controlled analgesia (PCA) in patients following craniotomy. Current research interest includes studying the safety of opioid administration following craniotomy using end-tidal CO2 detection.

Dr. Morad also has an interest in resident education. He created the department’s current ACGME-compliant Neuroanesthesia curriculum and has earned a Teacher of the Year award as recognition for his efforts in the area of education.

Research Summary

Dr. Morad’s research focuses on the perioperative management of pain for patients undergoing neurosurgery. He has completed two randomized controlled trials on the efficacy of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) in patients following craniotomy.

Currently, he is studying the safety of opioid administration following craniotomy using end-tidal CO2 detection. He is also collaborating on a project investigating the efficacy of transcortical magnetic stimulation (TMS) on postoperative pain following spine surgery.
