Background

Sowmya Sharma is a gastroenterologist specializing in inflammatory bowel disease. She treats patients who have Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease and microscopic colitis, as well as those who have experienced immunotherapy-related gastroenterological events. 

After Dr. Sharma obtained her medical degree at Dalhousie Medical School, she completed her residency training in internal medicine at the University of Ottawa. She went on to do her gastroenterology fellowship at Dalhousie University, after which she dedicated an additional year of training in advanced inflammatory bowel disease at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine before joining the faculty. 

Dr. Sharma’s research interests include inflammatory bowel disease, health equity and health care delivery models. Her clinical research has been published in many peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences.
