Dr. Winkle obtained his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, New York, where he also completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Then, he completed a fellowship in spinal cord injury medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. 

His research interests include functional recovery after spinal cord injury, musculoskeletal ultrasound and management of spasticity.
