Background
Jennifer Fairman brings over 20 years of experience in science, education, business policy, research, communication and design to be an effective visual problem-solver for her colleagues throughout the Hopkins community, and a dedicated educator and advisor to her students. She specializes in medical and scientific illustration for publication and patient education, 2D animation, web & interactive design, graphic design and small business practices. Her work has been published in over 960 peer-reviewed and non-peer reviewed scientific journal articles, textbooks and book chapters, monographs, science presentations, patient-ed materials, websites and videos.
Her creativity thrives when challenged by clients with new concepts. She is eager to utilize her diverse interests to broaden the spectrum of her practice into new areas of science through biomedical communication. Her contributions are highly recognized by the Association of Medical Illustrators (19 awards), Illustrators Club of DC, The National Science Foundation, Smithsonian Women’s Committee, James Smithson Society, and the Vesalius Trust.
Jeni received a BS in Biological Sciences and a BA in Studio Art while minoring in German language from the University of Maryland. She also received her MA in Medical and Biological Illustration from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she currently is an Associate Professor in the graduate program of Art as Applied to Medicine. She most recently graduated with her Master of Professional Studies in the Business of Art and Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) with perfect achievement. She was also named the Ratcliffe Foundation’s top grant winner of MICA’s third annual UP/Start Venture Competition.
She served as a scientific illustrator and research associate in entomology for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC within the National Museum of Natural History. She also interned for Hurd Studios in Brooklyn, New York, one of the pioneers in medical animation, where she story-boarded and illustrated for patient education medical videos.
Within the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine, Jeni helps clients like researchers, physicians, engineers and educators tell their stories through accurate and aesthetic communication visuals. With a rich background in both traditional and digital media, Jeni innovates and strategizes the most effective solutions for her clients’ audiences. She strives to instill these and many other principles in her students. She is often sought as a mentor to her peers.
Jeni is a professional member and served on the Board of Governors of the Association of Medical Illustrators. She is also a professional member of the GNSI, The Illustrators Club of Washington, DC, and has served for 4 terms as a Board Member and is currently an advisor to the Vesalius Trust. Jeni is the 1999 recipient of the Trust’s prestigious honor, the Inez Demonet Award. She is also a Fellow of the AMI and received it’s Outstanding Achievement Award.
