Research Summary

Dr. Rompalo is recognized both nationally and internationally as an expert in the field of STD research and application.  Since 1993, she has been the Medical Director and Primary Investigator for the Region III PTC.  In that capacity, she has worked collaboratively with other training agencies within the Region and the nation to develop, conduct and evaluate needs assessment surveys.  She has extensive experience developing such instruments, conducting and evaluating the results, and developing curricula to address the needs identified.  Dr. Rompalo has over 20 years of experience in conducting research in the STD field.  She has actively participated in the design and site-specific conduct of several national behavioral intervention studies, including Project Respect and the NIMH Multisite HIV Prevention Trial.

As one of two Principal Investigators of the Baltimore site HIV Epidemiology Research Study (HERS), Dr. Rompalo has extensive experience in the development, conduct, and analysis of large clinical trials.  As Principal Investigator on a recently completed CDC funded cooperative agreement to conduct research studies evaluating demonstration projects on feasibility of STD treatment and HIV prevention, Dr. Rompalo developed liaisons with several community-based centers and outreach programs to offer STD/HIV counseling and testing to many at-risk populations within Baltimore, including street youth, commercial sex workers, young injection drug users, and community-based walk-in clinics.  As director of the Region III STD/HIV Prevention Training Center for the past 10 years, Dr. Rompalo has developed and conducted many STD/HIV educational programs with the Baltimore City School-based Nurses Program, Baltimore City and County’s Maternal and Child Health Program, as well as several community-based organizations and Baltimore City Health Department community intervention projects.

Dr. Rompalo will serve as a co-investigator and assist with study design, attend monthly research team meetings, and yearly expert advisory committee meetings, assisting with data interpretation, project progress, manuscript preparation, and problem solving.
