Background

Dr. Smithers is a pediatric surgeon who specializes in Esophageal and Airway Treatment (EAT) Program in the Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. He joined the medical staff in 2019 and leads the EAT program. He sees patients on the Johns Hopkins All Children’s main campus and at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg. Dr. Smithers and his team were honored for Innovations in Clinical Care at Johns Hopkins All Children’s in the Johns Hopkins Medicine Clinical Awards for 2020. 

Dr. Smithers previously served as a surgeon at Boston Children’s Hospital from 2009-2019, as part of their EAT program. His clinical specialties are minimally invasive surgery, surgical critical care, esophageal atresia, airway malformations and congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

He earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College and completed his internship and residency in general surgery at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. He served as associate chief surgical resident and then chief surgical resident in pediatric surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital after completing a research fellowship in vascular anomalies and a surgical critical care fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital. He also completed a global surgery clinical fellowship at Harvard Medical School, where he served as an assistant professor.
