Established in 1983, the Johns Hopkins Heart Transplant Program developed an approach to treating congestive heart failure that is reducing hospital admissions, improving the quality of life for patients and lowering mortality rates. Besides an aggressive medical approach, the program stresses intensive education and lifestyle counseling. Johns Hopkins is proactive in maintaining or stabilizing patients awaiting heart transplants.

Accreditation
At the time of its inception in 1983, the Johns Hopkins Heart Transplant Program was accredited by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), a national transplantation organization.
