Background

Dr. Moyses Szklo is a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He received his MD degree from the State University of Rio de Janeiro and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine (Cardiology) at the Johns Hopkins University, Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Epidemiology, and director of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Summer Institute of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He has published more than 300 peer reviewed papers. He has been recipient of several awards, including the NIH Robert Gordon Lectureship Award and the title of “Commander of the Brazilian Government” from the Brazilian Government. Dr. Szklo was principal investigator of two landmark studies of cardiovascular diseases, the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study and the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).  He is past President of the Society of Epidemiologic Research, and past Chair (Epidemiology Section) and honorary Vice-President of the American Public Health Association.  He is currently principal investigator of a population-wide study of 85,000 Brazilian adolescents (Study of Cardiovascular Risk in Adolescents, (Portuguese acronym, ERICA).

Research Summary

Cardiovascular epidemiology in adults, cardiovascular risk factors in adolescents. Past principal investigator of the first cohort study to examine subclinical atherosclerosis (intimal-medial thickness of the carotid arteries), the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study and of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), which also included evaluation of coronary calcification and other markers of subclinical atherosclerosis. Principal investigator of a population-wide study in Brazil, the Study of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Adolescents (Portuguese acronym, ERICA), which enrolled a random sample of about 80,000 individuals aged 12-17 years, almost half of which had blood samples drawn.
