Background

Jennifer Acton Robinson is a gynecologist and obstetrician who specializes in family planning and general obstetric and gynecologic care, based in the Baltimore area. She is an assistant professor in both the family planning division of the Johns Hopkins Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and in the pharmacology division of the Department of Medicine.

Dr. Robinson cares for patients seeking medical and surgical abortions as well as reversible and permanent contraceptives. Her current research focuses on contraception for women living with HIV, drug interactions involving hormonal birth control methods, clinical pharmacology and microbicides (products that women can use to decrease their risk of HIV infection from sex).

Dr. Robinson completed fellowships in family planning and clinical pharmacology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Drexel University. She earned her medical degree and a master’s degree in public health from Tulane University and her undergraduate degree in biology and English literature from the University of Virginia.

Before joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Robinson served the Baltimore community as a staff physician at Planned Parenthood Maryland and Gynemed Surgical Center.

She is actively involved in training the next generation of gynecologic and obstetric providers — serving as instructor, lecturer and mentor on various aspects of her areas of expertise — and has received several awards for excellence in teaching. Additionally, she has published articles on drug interactions between HIV medications and hormonal contraceptives, bleeding patterns with hormonal contraceptives and how obesity may affect hormonal contraception. She has also published original research on the early drug development of two vaginal microbicides.

She is a member of several professional organizations including American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Society of Family Planning, Physicians for Reproductive Health and the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics.

Dr. Robinson is passionate about helping her patients achieve their reproductive goals, whatever they may be. One of her favorite things about being a gynecologist and obstetrician is getting to care for women ranging in age from the teenage years to the 70s and 80s. She firmly believes her patients are the experts in their own lives, and her role is to provide them with information and support to optimize their reproductive and sexual health.

In her time outside medicine, Dr. Robinson enjoys hiking, knitting, exploring new places locally and internationally, and spending time with family.
