Background

Dr. Larry Chang is a Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His area of clinical expertise is infectious diseases, with a special focus on HIV. He also holds joint appointments in epidemiology and international health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Chang received his medical degree and a master’s in public health from Emory University. He completed his residency training in internal medicine at the University of California-San Francisco and completed his fellowship in infectious diseases at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2009.

His primary research interest is HIV implementation science with a focus on how best to implement HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention interventions in resource-constrained settings. He is a PI of the Rakai Health Sciences Program in Uganda. He has also led research on the use of mobile health technologies for improving linkage and engagement in care and prevention services.

Research Summary

Dr. Chang’s primary research focus is HIV implementation science, specifically how to best implement HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention interventions (e.g., antiretroviral therapy) in resource-constrained settings. He has conducted randomized, controlled trials, observational studies and systematic reviews in this field. 

A related research area is mHealth (mobile health technology) strategies for improving global health and clinical care. Dr. Chang’s research is multidisciplinary, using mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative), and integrating behavioral science and economic evaluations with patient-oriented outcomes research.
