Dr. Regan joined the emergency medicine faculty in 2007 as the associate program director for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program. In July 2010, she took over as program director. Prior to Johns Hopkins, she served as the assistant program director of the Emergency Medicine Residency at New York University/Bellevue. In addition to her extensive work with the residency, she spent three years as the co-director of the Undergraduate Education Program in Emergency Medicine at New York University.
Dr. Regan’s interests are mainly in medical education, including curriculum development and evaluation, resident evaluation and feedback methods, and adult learning theory. She has developed interactive ways of teaching resident professionalism and communication skills, and was the primary investigator of a grant-funded project that evaluated this curriculum. . Recent interests include the development of a unique evaluation program in the era of milestones and the development of a mission-based approach to faculty teaching in an emergency department. In addition to her scholarly work, she has received multiple teaching awards and is a 2012 American College of Emergency Physicians Faculty Teaching Award winner.
Dr. Regan is well-known at Johns Hopkins for her work as an educational program builder and for the Focused Advanced Specialty Training, or FAST, program within the residency program. The program and its leadership were recently recognized by the Johns Hopkins Institute for Excellence in Education with its Educational Program Award, an award given to a program annually for its innovative approach to education.
Dr. Regan runs the Medical Education Fellowship within the Department of Emergency Medicine and is actively involved on a national level in furthering education within the field.
She has served on the board of directors for the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD) and on the program committees of both CORD and Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), and has lectured nationally at the American College of Emergency Physicians, CORD and SAEM.
Her main interests outside of medical education involve radiation exposure in emergency medicine and communication skills and their effect on patient compliance and satisfaction.
