Background

Andrew Cosgarea is a professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His areas of clinical expertise include sports injuries, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, elbow UCL reconstruction, knee ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair, and shoulder instability stabilization surgery.

Dr. Cosgarea’s research interests include patellofemoral dislocation, throwing shoulder biomechanics, ACL reconstruction, computer simulation of knee biomechanics, treatments for adolescent sports injuries, and knee and shoulder rehabilitation.

Currently serving as the head team physician for the Johns Hopkins University Department of Athletics, he is a former chief of the Division of Sports Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Cosgarea was a team physician for the Baltimore Orioles from 2000 to 2010. He was named one of the “125 Knee Surgeons and Specialist to Know” by Becker’s Spine Review in 2012. He is a member of various professional organizations, including the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Cosgarea was an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Ohio State University Medical Center and an orthopaedic consultant with the Ohio State Athletic Department.

Research & Publications

Research Summary

Dr. Cosgarea’s research interests involve knee biomechanics, especially the patellofemoral joint. He has worked in collaboration with biomechanical engineer John Elias, Ph.D., on a series of projects that use computational modeling to study patellofemoral realignment surgical techniques. He is also collaborating with Dr. John Carrino using a new imaging technology, dynamic CT scanning, to better analyze biomechanical parameters.

He has been involved in a series of projects exploring posterior knee anatomy. He maintains a database that tracks surgical treatment in patients with pigmented villonodular synovitis. He has studied shoulder range of motion in baseball pitchers by collecting retrospective data from the Baltimore Orioles and prospective data from the Johns Hopkins baseball teams.
