Piotr Franaszczuk, PhD
Associate Professor of Neurology
The Johns Hopkins Hospital
Department of Neurology
Meyer Bldg, Room 2-147
600 N. Wolfe Street
Baltimore, MD 21287
Dr. Piotr Franaszczuk earned the degrees of MSc and PhD in Physics from Warsaw University in Poland. Shortly after completing his PhD, he came to the US for fellowship training in Neurophysiology which he completed at the University Maryland.
Now an Associate Professor of Neurology at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Franaszczuk has been a member of the Department of Neurology since 1999 and is Co-Director of the Johns Hopkins Epilepsy Research Laboratory (ERL).
Dr. Franaszczuk's research is concentrated on the localization and detection of seizure onset in patients with epilepsy, analysis of dynamics of seizure spread in time and space, and modeling of seizure generation and propagation.
Dr. Franaszczuk is developing and implementing computational methods of signal analysis and neural modeling. Methods of EEG signal analysis include multichannel autoregressive modeling, Direct Transfer Function (DTF) method and time-frequency analysis using the Matching Pursuit algorithm.
A large (~65,000) realistic neuron network model developed in the ERL is used to investigate patterns of propagation of epileptiform activity and its dependence on connectivity and physiological properties of neurons and synapses.
