Columbia, MD – Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine (HCGH) is pleased to announce its designation as a Cardiac Interventional Center by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS).

The designation indicates that a hospital complies with Maryland state standards to receive patients transported by emergency medical services (EMS) who are experiencing the most common type of heart attack, called an ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). A STEMI occurs when an artery that supplies blood to the heart is blocked. Cardiac Interventional Centers provide catheter-based coronary intervention techniques to clear the blockage. Since 2003, HCGH has provided primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), also known as emergency angioplasty, to STEMI patients.

Peter Johnston, M.D., HCGH medical director of Invasive Cardiology, said, “We’re very proud to have received this designation, which is recognition of close collaboration among a number of hospital departments and our partnership with the Howard County Fire and Rescue Service. As the only hospital in Howard County, the ability to provide cardiac intervention is especially important to our county and the surrounding area between Baltimore and D.C., where, as the population continues to grow, these services will be needed more and more.”

Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine since 1998 is a 238-bed, not-for-profit health care provider located in Columbia, Maryland. A comprehensive, acute-care medical center, Howard County General offers a full range of services, from neonatal care and oncology to outpatient treatment and critical care.

The hospital has a professional staff of over 800 physicians and allied health professionals, representing more than 70 specialties and subspecialties; a workforce of nearly 2,000 individuals and volunteer auxilians numbering over 600.
