Awards and Recognition

We have been recognized by the following national and state organizations that measure quality and excellence in clinical care.

Accessibility-Universal Design Award - Commission on Disability

"Howard County General Hospital was nominated for their efforts to make new facilities and services fully accessible. Representatives approached the Commission’s Access Committee when expansion was in the early planning phase, and sought community input from people with disabilities, volunteer architects, and professionals to ensure the new facility would provide optimal accommodations. This partnership resulted in a welcoming hospital environment responsive to the needs of all patients."

Blood Bank – American Association of Blood Banks and College of American Pathologists www.aabb.org and www.cap.org

The Howard County General Hospital Blood Bank passed a recent accreditation survey with a perfect score of 100, maintaining accreditation for both the American Association of Blood Banks and the College of American Pathologists.

Comprehensive Cancer Program Accreditation - American College of Surgeons  www.facs.org/cancer

  • Howard County General Hospital is accredited as a “Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program” by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, the highest level commendation available to a community hospital. Previously recognized as a “Community Hospital Cancer Program,” this new designation reflects the program’s enhanced range of diagnostic and treatment services available on site or by referral. This new accreditation level also is due in part to the inclusion of a pain management specialist as part of the hospital’s cancer committee, weekly cancer conferences held at the hospital that are reviewing more patient cases than ever before, and additional services offered including a variety of cancer studies and extensive community outreach.
  • Our Cancer Services program also received the 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award from the Committee on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Award - American Heart Association  www.heart.org

Howard County General Hospital has been awarded the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Award for our high standards surrounding stroke care. The Award recognizes HCGH’s success in using the Get With The Guidelines quality improvement program to improve care for stroke patients.

Heart Attack – Maryland Health Care Commission  http://mhcc.maryland.gov

Howard County General Hospital has received a waiver from the Maryland Health Care commission to provide interventional treatment for certain heart attack patients through the Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) program. Patients experiencing a certain type of heart attack quickly receive potentially life-saving balloon angioplasty treatment, which opens arteries and minimizes damage to the heart muscle.

Perinatal Referral Center - Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services  www.miemss.org

Howard County General Hospital is designated as a Perinatal Referral Center. This designation recognizes the breadth and quality of obstetric and neonatal services offered to care for seriously ill pregnant women and newborns. To receive this designation, hospitals must demonstrate capability in providing uncomplicated and complicated obstetrical, neonatal and pediatric care through specific written standards, protocols and guidelines.

Primary Stroke Center – Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services  www.miemss.org

When a person is suffering a stroke, Maryland law requires that EMS ambulances bring the patient to the closest designated Primary Stroke Center. For this Primary Stroke Center designation, MIEMSS standards require hospitals to provide excellent patient care, including rapid assessment by a multi-disciplinary team and the most advanced treatment with clot-busting medications.
