Additional Information Licensed by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration and staffed by occupational therapists with advanced training in driver evaluation and rehabilitation, the Johns Hopkins Driving Program is designed to evaluate and improve driver safety. The program serves clients with the following diagnoses who are experiencing symptoms that may affect their driving skills: - Traumatic brain injuries
- Dementia and memory problems
- Stroke
- Diabetes
- Amputations
- Parkinson’s disease
- Spinal cord injuries
- Orthopedic conditions
- Low vision
- Multiple sclerosis
- Lower extremity paralysis
Healthy elderly people are also among the program's clients. Evaluation A full assessment consists of two parts, completed on two days: 1. A two-hour clinical assessment evaluating vision, cognition, visual perceptual, physical skills and reaction time. If the Maryland state standards for vision and reaction are met then the person proceeds to step 2. 2. A two-hour behind the wheel (BTW) assessment in the Driving Program car, beginning in a parking lot and progressing to more complex traffic. If the person has memory problems, then steps 1 and 2 must be completed as well as a second BTW assessment to determine consistency of performance. As a special feature of the Johns Hopkins Driving Program we are able to provide BTW assessments in a client’s community. There is a travel charge of $90 per hour, and the client has the benefit of being tested in a familiar area. Training Training consists of in-vehicle education and practice in challenging situations, use of adaptive equipment and correction of previously unsafe habits. Cost | Clinical Assessment (2 hours) | $180 | Behind the Wheel Assessment (2 hours) | $180 | Second Behind the Wheel Assessment, Travel & Training | $ 90/hour |
Hours of Operation Monday, Wednesday, Friday 7:30 am - 4 pm We are often asked when someone should be referred to our program. The American Medical Association guidelines, available at http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/10791.html, include a brief office screening used to determine when a referral is warranted. A physician's prescription requesting a driving assessment and listing a medical diagnosis is required for participation. All information is communicated to the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration, which makes the final determination about license retention based upon information the program supplies. We are unable to evaluate and treat people who are obtaining their license for the first time or who must drive while seated in a wheelchair. The client must be able to perform a car transfer in order to participate in the program. For more information or to make a referral to the Johns Hopkins Driving Program, please call 410-583-2643. |
