Dr. Matsuo earned both D.D.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Matsuo completed 3 years of post-doctoral research fellowship in the department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Johns Hopkins University.Dr. Matsuo has an interest in physiology and kinesiology of mastication and swallowing. His recent research has focused on understanding the interaction effect of respiration and feeding (mastication and swallowing). He also has been investigating the impact of feeding foods with various consistencies on swallowing in individuals with Parkinson’s disease or stroke as well as normal healthy young and old subject. He is now involved with a study using videofluorography and fine-wire electromyography to examine the coordination of tongue motion with jaw or hyoid motion and muscle activities of the jaw and neck during mastication, bolus transport and swallowing.
