The Foundations in Public Health: Epidemiology, Ethics and Health Care Systems course is taught by multidisciplinary faculty from the School of Medicine, Bloomberg School of Public Health and Berman Institute for Bioethics. Faculty use a combination of lecture, readings, interactive panel presentations, reflective writing and small-group discussion in this course. Students elect two “selectives” to attend within the course to study topics in greater depth; selectives meet three weeks in a row.

Course Goals

The overall goals of the course are:

• To develop basic knowledge and understanding of:
  • epidemiologic methods and their application to clinical medicine,
  • ethical principles that apply to clinical medicine and research, &
  • fundamental aspects of the American health care system;
• To explore selected areas of interest at the interface between public health and clinical medicine; and
• To stimulate interest in being an effective advocate for improving health and health care for the populations of patients that you will serve.

Time Commitment and Course Length

Course meets 11 weeks from October to December. For the first 10 weeks, meetings occur on Tuesday afternoons from 2 to 4 p.m. In the last week, Epidemiology meets for five days in a row.
