The pediatric surgery fellow is the team leader for the pediatric surgery health care team. The pediatric surgery fellow rounds twice daily with the team and is the designated and acknowledged team leader. The fellow makes health care decisions on behalf of the faculty with faculty input. The team members include: junior residents in pediatrics or surgery, advanced practice providers, medical or physician assistant students, nurses, social workers and pharmacists. The advanced practice providers are primarily responsible for data collection and execution of management plans, students function primarily as learners, and residents participate in patient management appropriate to their level of training. The pediatric surgical fellow is charged with coordinating all of these activities and communication between team members is continuous throughout the day by means of face to face verbal communication, telephone communication, and other forms of electronic communication.
The senior fellow is responsible for the administrative organization of the service which includes (but is not limited to): case assignments, clinic assignments, call schedules, conference organization, evaluations, and teaching.
Faculty supervision is provided using a “surgeon of the week” model. This attending provides continuity of supervision for the inpatient clinical service and is the primary resource to the fellows while on service. The remaining faculty continue to interact with the fellows during this time in the course of their elective case schedule and outpatient clinic patients.
