January 2013 Update

As we have just begun 2013, I wanted to take the time to wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year and to update you on the status of the OWISM.

Leadership Program for Women Faculty

We have just convened our fourth cohort of the LPWF and our community of women leaders continues to grow. We have attached a list of our new participants and our cohort includes faculty from the School of Nursing, the School of Public Health, School of Engineering as well as the School of Medicine. I believe this diversity will further enrich our class and will allow women leaders to emerge across the entire University.

Emerging Women Leadership Program

Our next cohort has been selected  and the first session will begin on January, 18, 2013. Please see the attached list of our upcoming 2013 cohort!

Work/Life Intersection Series

The Office of Women in Science and Medicine will hold an interactive session on “Eldercare” which will take place on Tuesday, February 12, from 12:00PM-1:00PM in the West Room located on the ground floor of the Turner Concourse. This is part of a series for women faculty and staff to discuss issues surrounding work-life intersection. Join Diane Schaefer, a local geriatric care manager, to learn about the continuum of housing options for older adults, including independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing facilities, and continuing care retirement communities.  In this workshop you will learn about the amenities and medical services available in each level of care, as well as information about fee structures and contracts.  Whether you are currently researching facilities for a loved one or thinking about your future housing needs, this workshop will provide you with the tools and resources to make an informed decision.  Please take the time to attend this important workshop which will provides critical information regarding eldercare.   Please bring your lunch, dessert and beverages will be provided. This session is open to all women faculty and staff, please RSVP to the if you plan to attend!

Information and Conversation

The OWISM will host its first Information and Conversation session entitled “When and How to Say No” which will be facilitated by Jennifer Haythornthwaite. Learning when and how  to juggle the many  opportunities you have, and which ones to turn down,  is critical for your academic success.  This session will take place on Thursday March 27, from noon to 1pm. It will be held in MRB G01. Please make the time to attend this important session. This session is open to all SOM women faculty. Respond to if you plan to attend. Bridging The Gap

The OWISM invites junior women faculty  and post doctoral students (both in the basic sciences and clinical areas) to attend the first lecture  in the 2013 Bridging the Gap Program. This session entitled “Time Management”  will be facilitated by David Yousem, Associate Dean for Faculty.  The ability to manage one’s busy schedule is critical to promotion. Please take the time to attend this important session which will be held on Tuesday, April 2, from noon to 1pm in the Zayed Lecture Room(2117). Please reply to the  if you plan to attend, and specify this particular session. Bring your lunch, beverages and desserts will be provided. Please see attached flyer.

OWISM Speed Mentoring

The OWISM has initiated a new and exciting speed mentoring program.   We will have 4 sessions this year in March, June, September and December.  The purpose of this program is to allow our more junior women faculty, (Mentees) the opportunity to meet more senior women faculty, (Mentors) in an interactive forum to discuss various issues and concerns related to their professional careers. During each hourly session, mentors will have the opportunity to interact with 3 distinct mentees.  Mentors will meet with each of their assigned mentees for 12-15 minutes and address a specific question raised by the mentee.  We are planning our next program on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, in the Zayed Lecture Hall from 8:30 – 9:30am.  We are looking for mentors and mentees, so please contact the if you want to learn about this program and/or register!  Light Breakfast will be served starting at 8:15 AM.  Please see attached flyer for 2013 sessions.

OWISM Holiday Celebration

The OWISM had a wonderful turn out for the Annual Holiday Celebration, which took place  on December 18, 2012 from 4-6pm in the Turner Pre-Function area.  This was a great opportunity for women to  network from departments across the School of Medicine.  Attached are a few pictures from the event. Save the Date for the OWISM Annual Event

Please save the date to attend the Fifth Annual Office of Women in Science and Medicine Event and Presentation of the Vice Dean's Award.  The OWISM is very excited to announce that Martha Hill, Dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing will speak on Wednesday June 13, 2013 at 4:00 PM in the Chevy Chase Auditorium in the Zayed Tower(2119A).  Full details about this event and requests for nominations for the Vice Dean’s Award for the Advancement of Women Faculty will follow shortly!

Other Programs of Interest

In addition to OWISM events, there are many events both on and off our campus which are of interest to our women faculty!

The American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) will hold its the 98th anniversary meeting on  March 15-17 (Friday-Sunday) in New York City. This year, our own Dr. Julie Freischlag is one of the featured speakers.  There will likely also be some tie-in activities on Friday with the UN Session of the Commission on the Status of Women. This is a great opportunity for women from different medical disciplines to network and connect with each other. The program includes clinical and scientific updates, as well as career-oriented topics and networking opportunities.

AAMC 2013 Early Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar (EWIMS)

This seminar is designed for women at the instructor or assistant professor level. This seminar is for physicians and scientists holding medical school appointments and in the early stages of leadership positions within their discipline, department, or institution. 

The application phase for EWIMS will open in the beginning of March and will close in early April. The seminar will be held July 13-16, 2013 at The Inverness in Englewood, CO.

 2013 Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar (MidWIMS)

This seminar is designed for women primarily at the associate professor level. Women in the early stages of a professorial appointment will be considered on an individual basis. The seminar is for physicians and scientists holding medical school appointments and holding leadership positions within their discipline, department, or institution.

The application phase for MidWIMS will open in late August, and will close in late September. The seminar will be held December 14-17, 2013 at the AT&T Executive Education Conference Center in Austin, TX.

Awards of Interest

IEE/SOM EDUCATION AWARDS NOMINATIONS OPEN: The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is rich with talent.  We have great teachers, educators and leaders.  The IEE Education Awards are designed to recognize and celebrate our outstanding educators and acknowledge great achievements in education. All awards are open to any full or part-time faculty member of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.   Except for the Heiser and Abeloff awards, peer or self-nomination is permitted, though all nominations will be peer reviewed and all awards peer selected.

2013 Award Nomination Deadline: February 22, 2013

This year, we have clarified and made more specific the documentation required to demonstrate excellence in each category.  Each award recipient will receive a certificate, recognition on the IEE website “Awards” page, and a $1000 honorarium.
