Wilmer at the 2017 American Academy of Ophthalmology Meeting

Wilmer had a significant presence at The 2017 American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting held in New Orleans from Nov. 14 - Nov. 17. Wilmer faculty presented on the latest developments in diagnosis, treatment, management and research related to eye conditions and diseases.

2017 Arnall Patz Lecture

Dr. Neil Bressler

Neil Bressler, M.D.

"DRCR Network: Accomplishments and Vision for the Future"
Dr. Neil Bressler discusses the establishment of the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network in 2003, with the National Institutes of Health, to facilitate multicenter clinical research on diabetic retinopathy and associated conditions. The network currently involves more than 300 clinical sites, over 1,000 retina specialists in North America and almost 10,000 study participants across 25 protocols, resulting in over 70 publications that have contributed to major improvements in the management of diabetic macular edema and proliferative diabetic retinopathy.


International Blindness Prevention Award

Sheila West, Ph.D., Pharm. D.

The International Blindness Prevention Award, established in 1992, honors an individual who has made significant contributions to reducing blindness and/or restoring sight worldwide. The presentation of the International Blindness Prevention Award takes place during the opening ceremony of the Academy's annual meeting.

Distinguished Honor Award on behalf of the PAAO

Dr. Fernando Arevalo

Fernando Arevalo, M.D.

The 2017 Life Achievement Honor recognizes individuals for their contributions to the Academy, its scientific and educational programs and to ophthalmology. 

Dr. Arevalo also accepted the Distinguished Honor Award as the president of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO)This award is a testament to PAAO’s long legacy of commitment and dedication to the advancement of ophthalmology in the Americas. Through its mission of education and leadership training within the region’s rich and different cultural contexts, it has fostered the creation of lifelong friendships that have strengthened ophthalmology in the region.
