Johns Hopkins US Family Health Plan wants you to be prepared this flu season. So what can you do at work and at home to prepare for it and protect yourself, your colleagues and your family?

Identify the Symptoms

The Symptoms of the novel H1N1 flu are much like the symptoms of the regular flu, individuals have the following:

  • Fever (temperature of 100 F or greater)
  • Headache
  • Body Aches
  • Extreme fatigue (tiredness)
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Vomiting and Diarrhea

Practice Good Hygiene

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough, or sneeze. Alcohol based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Throw away the tissue in the trash after you use it
  • To help prevent the spread of germs, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
  • Do NOT share eating utensils, drinking glasses, washcloths, towels, beds, pillows until everyone in your household has been free of symptoms for 7 days.

Seek Medical Attention

Sometimes it is appropriate to seek medical treatment from your doctor. People who are more likely to need medical treatment from their doctor for the flu are those who are very young, very old or have serious medical condition (such as cancer, HIV, severe diabetes, lung disease or are on dialysis).

If you think you need medical treatment: call your Primary Care Physician first before calling 911 or going to the Emergency Room.
