About Us

Surgeon-in-Chief Robert Higgins

As the director of surgery at Johns Hopkins, I welcome you to our website, which is our communication link to patients, alumni, medical students, residents and present faculty.

The Department of Surgery has a vision and plan that is based on the solid ground that has been established by my predecessors: Halsted, Lewis, Blalock, Zuidema, Cameron, and Freischlag.

We are known for excellent care of patients and being ranked among the top hospitals in the United States, having a strong reputation for teaching medical students, training surgical residents and possessing a core of well-funded and state of the art research activity. Globally, the vision for the Department of Surgery is to maintain its position as the premier leader in surgery, setting the highest standards for patient care and safety, redefining excellence in research that fosters innovation and creativity, and providing academic learning for the next generation of surgeons and other surgical leaders.

We welcome your comments and participation!

Robert S.D. Higgins, M.D., M.S.H.A.
