Toy Shopping Tips and Tools to Ease Holiday Stress

Release Date: December 11, 2013

Bethesda, Md., (December 11, 2013) – While the holidays can be an exciting time of year, they can also be stressful for parents as well as children. How do you know if your child’s wish list includes safe, age-appropriate toys and games? How can you help your children cope with any stress they may be feeling during the holiday season?

According to Dr. Leila Hall, Suburban Hospital’s new chair of pediatrics and medical director of the Shaw Family Pediatric Emergency Center at Suburban Hospital, parents should be selective when purchasing toys, making sure they are safe for the age of the child. For example, toys that contain magnets can be very dangerous for young children who still put things in their mouths. “If two or more magnets are swallowed they can cause bowel obstructions that can have fatal consequences,” she said.

Dr. Hall also recommends reading the manufacturer’s label before making a toy purchase. “It can tell you a lot about age appropriateness, whether or not adult supervision is needed, and other safety risk considerations,” she said.

On making the holidays more enjoyable and less stressful, Dr. Hall reminds parents that one of the best things they can do is model healthy lifestyle behaviors for their children and that “the most important gift you can give your kids is the gift of your time.”
