For more than 20 years, the hospital’s Adopt-A-Family program has partnered with local elementary schools to identify families who need the most help during the holiday season.

The Sleep Disorders Center at Suburban Hospital now offers home sleep testing. In some cases, insurance companies may require that a home study be completed before, or in lieu of, a hospital-based study. In this case, an intake specialist schedules the patient for an appointment with a sleep technician at Suburban Hospital during which they will provide hands-on education and instruction on the testing process, easy set-up and use in the home.

In their opinion dated September 10, 2013, the Maryland Court of Special Appeals affirmed the judgment of the Montgomery County Circuit Court, which upheld the 2010 decision of the Montgomery County Board of Appeals granting a special exception modification for Suburban Hospital’s campus enhancement project.

Suburban Hospital has been re-certified as a Level II Trauma Center by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System for the next five years. The hospital is the only designated trauma center in Montgomery County and one of only four hospitals in Maryland with the designation.

When it comes to exercise, Suburban Hospital doctors practice what they preach. For example, Keith Horvath, M.D., started biking to work five years ago. The Georgetown resident and Suburban Hospital’s chief of cardiothoracic surgery rides his recumbent bike eight miles each way to and from the hospital three to four times per week from March to December.

The Suburban Hospital Foundation has received a $2.5M charitable gift from the Bender Foundation. The donation will serve as a leadership gift for the hospital’s upcoming campus enhancement project, while also directly impacting nursing and emergency/trauma care. The funding will establish the Sondra D. Bender Fund for Nursing Excellence as well as dedicate the state-of-the-art Sondra & Howard Bender Emergency/Trauma Center.

Suburban was one of nine hospitals in the state to achieve the highest rating possible in the Maryland/DC region, with a score of “Better,” the highest rating on a five-point scale.

On Saturday, June 22, Suburban Hospital will host “Ready, Set, Grow!” a FREE, on-site kids’ festival from 1 to 4pm at 8600 Old Georgetown Road. The event will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of pediatrics at the hospital and recognize generous funding from the Shaw Family Foundation. The innovative emergency and inpatient children’s unit will be rededicated as the Shaw Family Pediatric Emergency Center.

Suburban Hospital recently honored Emergency Department nurse Kathleen Nichols, R.N., with the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nursing. Nichols has been a nurse for almost ten years and has been with Suburban Hospital for the last two years.
