Diversity & Inclusion

The Johns Hopkins Graduate Biomedical Education Program, together with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins University, is fully committed to the shared values of diversity and inclusion in order to achieve and sustain excellence. We firmly believe that we best promote excellence by recruiting and retaining a diverse group of students, and promoting a sense of inclusion and belonging for every member of our community. This climate for diversity, inclusion and excellence is critical to attaining the best scholarship, teaching, and research.

We fully recognize that diverse groups are a major driving force for excellence, creativity and innovation, and maximally fuel scientific advance, in common purpose to critically improve the human condition for all.

Taken together these values are recognized and supported fully by Johns Hopkins leadership at all levels. Further, we recognize that the responsibility for excellence, diversity and inclusion lies with all of us at the Institution: leadership, administration, faculty, staff and students. We are certain that we are better together!

Inclusion is in our DNA

Nearly a century and a half ago, our founder, Mr. Johns Hopkins, wrote a letter in which he established his vision for and values of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Those values – respect, dignity, integrity, inclusion, excellence, and diversity – have withstood the test of time and still ring true today. 

These core values provide a key foundation for our programs and student groups:

Biomedical Scholars Association

The Biomedical Scholars Association (BSA) is a tri-school organization that supports graduate students from underrepresented minority backgrounds across the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing. BSA provides academic and social support for diverse scholars within the Hopkins community; promotes their professional success; provides a network for career development and advancement; and serves the immediate Baltimore community through volunteerism. As a group, BSA celebrates inclusive excellence. Email bsa@jhmi.edu.

GSS/LGBT Community at Hopkins

The Gertrude Stein Society (GSS) is an organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and allied members across the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health. GSS is dedicated to supporting the LGBTQ+ community at Hopkins through community-building, advocacy, and service.  Email: gss@jhmi.edu

Graduate Women’s Empowerment Network

The Graduate Women's Empowerment Network (GWEN) is an organization dedicated to increasing the representation of women with graduate degrees at all levels of STEM professions, especially promoting leadership and professional development. GWEN works to connect, inspire, support and empower women scientists across the Hopkins community. 

Native Circle

Native Circle was founded in 2002 by a group of Johns Hopkins Native American graduate students. The group is comprised of Hopkins students, staff, faculty and community members who are committed to training, educating, supporting and advancing the well being of Native American people through self-determination, academic achievement and community service. Native Circle's goals are to provide spiritual, emotional, personal and academic support for Native American students; bring awareness and understanding of Native American culture to the Hopkins community; help recruit Native American students and Scholars; to create a dialogue for addressing issues related to Native American health, education, social, economic and culture; to create a network of other educational centers and resources serving Native American people.  Email: jhsph.ncircle@jhu.edu.

Hopkins-UMB SACNAS:

The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) is an inclusive organization dedicated to fostering the success of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans, from college students to professionals, in attaining advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The Hopkins-UMB SACNAS chapter is dedicated to supporting the community of Hispanic/Chicano and Native American STEM students by promoting professional development and engagement in scientific research.
