Graduate Student Transportation and Parking

Between biking, the bus, walking and driving, graduate students at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have a variety of options for their daily commute to campus.


Some students who live in nearby neighborhoods often walk or ride a bike to campus. Bike racks are available on campus — two of the largest racks are located in the Rutland Street breezeway and outside the Preclinical Teaching Building.

To ensure the security of your bicycle, secure it to the bike rack, secure removable parts, engrave the bicycle. and keep the bike’s purchase and identifying information.

To ensure your own safety, make sure that you have reflectors/lights on your bicycle, follow traffic laws and wear a helmet.

If you walk around campus at night, consider using an escort from Johns Hopkins Medicine Corporate Security. Escorts are available 24/7 by calling 410-955-5585.

Please note that the escort service is confined to campus boundaries.


Several shuttles are provided free of charge by The Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine. The most popular line is the Homewood-JHMI shuttle, which runs from the Homewood campus to the medical campus with stops in Charles Village, Penn Station and Mount Vernon. There are also shuttles that run to Patterson Park, Bond Street Wharf (Fell’s Point), Green Spring Station, Mount Washington and other Johns Hopkins campuses, including Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Eastern High School and Church Home.

Public Transportation

Baltimore’s public transit system includes buses, a subway line, the Light Rail and commuter trains. MTA Maryland provides numerous transportation options to the East Baltimore campus.

Subsidized student passes for all buses, the Light Rail and the subway are available for $25 per month in the business office in Miller Research Building, room 131. MARC monthly passes are valid for MTA bus, Light Rail and subway lines. Please not that MARC passes are not available at the business office.


If you are unable to bike, walk or take public transportation to campus, there are several parking options for drivers.

Subsidized On-Site Parking: A limited number of subsidized parking spaces in three campus garages are provided for graduate students in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for $55 a month, which is automatically deducted from your paycheck. In order to apply for a subsidized parking space, please follow the directions below. You cannot obtain on-site subsidized parking by going to the parking office.

  1. Email the GSA parking representative at
  2. Include your name, Johns Hopkins email address, graduate program and badge number (from the front of your Johns Hopkins ID) in the email.
  3. Indicate your preference for the Washington Street, Caroline Street or Ashland garage. If you would like the first available space, list the garages in order of preference. You cannot transfer between garages once assigned a subsidized spot.

The GSA has 200 subsidized on-site parking spots.  There is currently a waitlist for subsidized on-site parking. The waiting time for a subsidized spot can range from a month to more than a year. The waitlist is established in the order in which applications are received, and there is one waitlist for all garages.  Please allow 5-7 business days after emailing the GSA parking representative to receive a response about your parking request.

When a parking space is available, you will be notified by email. You have one week to accept this spot before it will be offered to the next student on the list.

Nonsubsidized On-Site Parking: Students can also purchase a parking space in a campus garage for $120 per month. To apply, please visit the parking office in the Nelson/Harvey Building, room 108. In addition to single parking passes, carpool parking passes are also available.

Commuter Parking Lots: Two satellite lots available for student use, both of which are free to students. Frequent shuttle service is provided from the lots to campus, but these lots are only open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. For space in a satellite lot, please visit the business office in Miller Research Building, room 131.

  • Monument Lot: This lot is located at 3700 E. Monument St., about 1.3 miles east of campus. This lot is convenient for drivers coming from I-95. A $20 refundable deposit is required for a lot pass.
  • Fallsway Lot: This lot is located at 545 N. High St. and is convenient to I-83. Space is limited.

Free “After-Hours” On-Site Parking: Parking in most garages, except the Kennedy Krieger Institute, is open to all Johns Hopkins Medicine employees free of charge from 4:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and on weekends and holidays. You must swipe your badge to enter and exit the garages. If your badge does not work in the garages for after-hours parking, contact the Johns Hopkins Medicine Parking Office in the Nelson/Harvey Building, room 108.

Please note that each garage has different hours on the weekends and evenings. The McElderry Street Garage, the Orleans Street Garage, Ashland Garage and the Rutland Garage are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
