Scholarships change lives.
Whether you've received a scholarship, created one or both.

2014 Scholarship Recognition Event

Annually, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine celebrates scholarship and philanthropy with the Scholarship Recognition Event. Donors and scholarship representatives have the chance to meet recipients to see firsthand the impact of their support. Please enjoy highlights of the 2014 Scholarship Recognition Event highlighting the Levi Watkins, Jr., M.D., Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, its alumni and its friends remain committed to this same tradition of philanthropic support for its current student body over 100 years after Mr. Hopkins made such provisions in his will. Scholarships play a crucial role in attracting the exceptional students that continue to make this a top rated medical school. From the day the Johns Hopkins University enrolled its first class in 1876, scholarships have been provided to excellent students who otherwise might not have the means to attend. It was a condition of Johns Hopkins' bequest that such support be provided for students "most deserving of choice because of their character and promise."

The Scholarship Recognition Event is a wonderful event that brings together School of Medicine scholarship donors and scholarship recipients. Students have a chance to say a personal and heartfelt "thank you," and donors have a chance to see the impact on the lives their investment makes. Personal stories abound, connections are made and lasting friendships are created.

"I would like to sincerely express my gratitude to all who have contributed to the Levi Watkins, Jr., M.D., Endowed Scholarship Fund over the years; your support is truly appreciated. It is an honor to stand before you all tonight as the recipient of this year’s Watkins Scholarship. You all should know, I never imagined that I would be accepted to medical school, certainly not one named Johns Hopkins, and moreover be the recipient of such a prestigious award. This is truly humbling to say the least."

In 2008, a group from the Class of 1983 joined forces to begin a fundraising campaign for their upcoming 25th Reunion to pay tribute to Dr. Watkins. At their June 2009 Reunion, the graduates held a reception to announce the Levi Watkins, Jr., M.D., Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship was fully funded in 2010 to recognize Dr. Watkins’ groundbreaking accomplishments, to honor his vision of bringing underrepresented minority medical students to Johns Hopkins and to provide essential financial assistance.
