Lavina D. Bharwani, M.D.

Medical Director

Dr. Lavina Bharwani with Johns Hopkins Singapore

In 2006, Dr. Lavina Bharwani joined our team at Johns Hopkins Singapore with 15 years of experience in the medical world. After graduating with her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, Dr. Bharwani went on to complete her internal medicine residency training and fellowship training in hematology/oncology at the same institution where she acted as the assistant professor of medicine in the hematology/oncology division.

Dr. Bharwani is certified in medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

As the assistant director of clinical education at Johns Hopkins Singapore and a core faculty member of the National Healthcare Group (NHG) Senior Residency Program, Dr. Bharwani has been heavily involved in the development of the educational programs offered at Johns Hopkins Singapore. She has also been involved in the development of the oncology training programs at Tan Tock Seng Hospital's medical oncology department and is the lead for medical oncology at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in Singapore. Dr. Bharwani’s current research interests include Breast Cancer, Gynecologic and gastrointestinal malignencies, and phase II & III clinical trials.

In 2002, Dr. Bharwani was the recipient of the Eli Lilly Award. In 2010, she was awarded the MyCare Recognition Award by Tan Tock Seng Hospital. In 2013, she received the NHG Outstanding Education Partners Award.

 

Alex Y. Chang, M.D.

Dr. Alex Chang with Johns Hopkins Singapore

Senior Consultant Alex Chang joined Johns Hopkins Singapore in 1999, with over 30 years of work experience in cancer treatment and research. After obtaining his medical degree from National Taiwan University's School of Medicine, Dr. Chang continued his residency and fellowship training at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, Conn., and at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center, respectively.

Prior to his current role with us, Dr. Chang served as the president and director of the Upstate New York Cancer Research & Education Foundation in Rochester, N.Y., and as a professor of oncology in medicine from 1995 to 1996 at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in New York. Dr. Chang’s current research interests include Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer and New modality therapy.

Dr. Chang is a much sought-after speaker at national and international meetings. He currently serves as an editor for Oncology and the Asia-Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology. He has reviewed clinical papers for numerous journals such as Oncology, Cancer, Journal of Clinical Oncology and Journal of Thoracic Oncology. In addition, he has published many peer-reviewed scientific papers.

 

Jens Samol, M.D.

Dr. Jens Samol

Dr. Samol joined the Medical Oncology team at Johns Hopkins Singapore in 2015 with 20 years of experience as a doctor in the United Kingdom (UK), including 15 years’ experience in haematology and medical oncology. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins Singapore, he was a Consultant at St George’s Hospital, London, and a Consultant at Southampton University Hospital.  He was also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George’s University, London.

Dr. Samol is certified by the UK General Medical Council in Medical Oncology, Haematology and Internal Medicine. His current research interests include lymphoid neoplasms and other haematological malignancies, and gastro-intestinal cancers.

Dr. Samol graduated in medicine from the Free University of Berlin, Germany, and obtained his Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in the UK. He underwent his specialty training in Medical Oncology at The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, Glasgow, and The Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals, Oxford, and his Haematology training at The Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals, Oxford, and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

Dr. Samol was awarded his MD with Magna Cum Laude from Germany. He was a Principle Investigator at St George’s Hospital, and a Co-Investigator for phase I, II and III clinical trials throughout his consultancy and specialty training.

Dr. Samol is fluent in German and English.

 

Chia Yee Hong, M.D.

Dr. Chia Yee Hong joined the Johns Hopkins Singapore team with an M.D. and M.Sc. degree from the University of Toronto in Canada. She was also elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Society there.

She completed her internal medicine residency training at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. She completed her clinical fellowship training in hematology and medical oncology at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Chia’s current research interests include breast cancer and health services.

Dr. Chia is certified in internal medicine and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

 

Wong Siew Wei, M.B.B.S., FRACP

Siew Wei Wong

Dr. Wong Siew Wei joined the Johns Hopkins Medicine family as a consultant in medical oncology in 2014. He serves as the program director for the National Healthcare Group Medical Oncology Residency Program, which is run in collaboration with Tan Tock Seng Hospital. 

He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Melbourne. He subsequently commenced Basic Physician Training at the Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre and Northern Hospital in Victoria, Australia. Upon completion of his Basic Physician Training, he pursued the Advanced Physician Training in medical oncology and trained at Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania and Eastern Health, Alfred Hospital and Cabrini Hospital in Victoria. He also completed a Clinical Diploma in Palliative Medicine. Dr. Wei’s current research interests include gastrointestinal cancer, thoracic oncology and genitourinary cancer.

Dr Wei is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and European Society of Medical Oncology.

 

Yeo Wee Lee, M.B.B.S.

Dr. Yeo Wee Lee of Johns Hopkins Singapore

Following his appointment as medical oncologist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore, Dr. Yeo Wee Lee is now a consultant in oncology at Johns Hopkins Singapore and Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Dr. Yeo pursued his undergraduate medical training at the National University of Singapore under a Shaw Foundation Scholarship. He went on to obtain his membership in the Royal College of Physicians and specialty training in medical oncology at the National University Hospital in Singapore.

In 2009, Dr. Yeo was awarded the Singapore National Medical Research Council Overseas Research Fellowship, which gave him the opportunity to spend a year at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Mass. Upon his return, Dr. Yeo served as director of undergraduate medical education and consulting medical oncologist at the National University Hospital.

Dr. Yeo is actively involved in our undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programs in collaboration with Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He is also a senior clinical lecturer in medicine at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Dr. Yeo’s current research interests include head and neck cancer, and thoracic and gastrointestinal malignancies. 

Troy Sullivan, M.D.

Consultant in Internal Medicine

Dr. Troy Sullivan with Johns Hopkins Singapore

Before joining Johns Hopkins Singapore in 2006, Dr. Troy Sullivan was in the private practice in the United States. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Michigan.

Before coming to Singapore, Dr. Sullivan practiced internal medicine for 17 years in California and Georgia. His main focus today is on the development of general medical services and the health screening programs at Johns Hopkins Singapore.

Dr. Sullivan has been the leader of the Infection Control Program at Johns Hopkins Singapore since 2010, and he is an active member of the Infection Control Committee in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He isaAlso involved as a physician leader in the quality and patient safety program at Johns Hopkins Singapore. Dr. Sullivan acts as a liaison officer for quality improvement activities with Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Dr. Sullivan is currently pursuing a master's degree in public health through The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. He intends to use this added training to improve his skills in hospital epidemiology and infection control, pursue research and provide greater epidemiology and biostatistics education for our trainee doctors.
