Hepatology Multidisciplinary Center

The Multidisciplinary Clinic for Liver Transplantation and Liver Tumors provides the National Capital Region access to the highest quality care and the most up-to-date treatments for advanced liver disease and liver tumors. This clinic offers patients evaluation and care by a diverse group of experts that would otherwise only be possible with multiple appointments at different locations, provided on a single day in a convenient downtown Bethesda location.

The Liver Transplant program of the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Transplant Center has the highest patient survival rate in the mid-Atlantic, and the best one year patient and graft survival rates in Maryland. With some of the best liver specialists in the country gathered in one location, this multidisciplinary clinic provides the Washington D.C. area access to the highest quality care and the most up-to-date treatments of advanced liver disease and liver tumors.

Consultation at the clinic includes:

  • Access to nationally recognized experts in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary diseases;
  • Specialized evaluation by transplant surgeons, hepatologists, social workers and nurse coordinators who are certified experts in the area of organ transplantation;
  • Comprehensive assessment, including clinical evaluation, laboratory work and review of all pathologic and radiologic studies;
  • Access to the most up-to-date clinical trials for chronic liver disease and liver transplantation; and
  • Coordination of care with written and oral communication to your primary care and/or referring physician with specialized nurse navigator services.

Patients will leave their clinic appointments with a plan of care based on expert findings. This will include:

  • Schedule for outpatient testing, with testing options in the DC area;
  • Clearly defined expectations and conditions which must be met in order to be placed on a liver transplant waiting list; and
  • Ongoing follow up with a transplant hepatologist and transplant coordinator.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Cirrhosis of the liver due to any etiology
