Childbirth Education

Thank you for choosing Sibley Memorial Hospital. We are here to help you have the best possible birth experience. Sibley's Childbirth Education Department recommends that expectant parents take a class during the seventh month of pregnancy or earlier. It is best to register during your first trimester as classes fill up quickly. In general, class listings are posted 4 to 6 weeks in advance of the class date. For inquiries related to childbirth classes, email childbirth@jhmi.edu.

Baby Care Skills
This class will teach you skills, such as bathing, diapering, comforting a crying baby and recognizing signs of illness, as well as coping methods for the first few weeks of parenthood. 

Breastfeeding: The First Two Weeks
This pre-natal breastfeeding class teaches the art of breastfeeding to expectant parents. Learn about prenatal preparation, getting started, understanding your baby’s cues, timing feedings, expressing and storing milk, bottles and your breastfed baby, and more. 

Childbirth Preparation
This class is designed to prepare families for their first labor and birth experience. This childbirth class provides evidence-based information on the physiological and emotional aspects of labor and delivery through lecture, discussion, video and hands-on practice. Our goal is to increase your confidence and reduce anxiety about the birthing process. 

Infant CPR, Safety, & Childproofing
Classes are taught by certified American Heart Association instructors. This course includes hands-on CPR instruction for infants according to American Heart Association standards, as well as Car Seat Safety, Back 2 Sleep, Childproofing and more. The class is designed for parents and childcare providers. This course is not a certification course. 

Itsy Bitsy Yoga for Babies
For newborns to nearly crawling babies, Itsy Bitsy Yoga Babies classes contain dozens of unique yoga postures designed to support baby's development. Each class is filled with calming, nurturing ways to enhance bonding and improve baby's sleep. During Itsy Bitsy Yoga class, babies enjoy yoga while on their backs, tummies, or held in loving arms. Parents are encouraged to get support and learn about baby's emerging personality. No yoga is experience required.

Weekend Baby Care & Breastfeeding Class
This class combines the two skills parents are most eager to learn. In just one day, you will learn how to take care of your newborn at home and get started with breastfeeding. The class is designed for busy parents-to-be who want to take both classes in one day. 

Baby Care Skills and Infant CPR Combo
A great alternative for parents who want to save time. This offering is a combination of our Baby Care Skills and Infant CPR, Safety, & Childproofing classes. 

Online Childbirth Class
Can’t fit a class into your busy schedule? Try our online class option!
The eight-chapter program is an interactive, Web-based class that uses videos, personal birth stories, animations, activities and games to teach all the essential information parents need to know to prepare for their birth. Learn more

Mom & Baby Group
This is a FREE educational and social group, facilitated by Lactation Services. New mothers are invited to bring their newborns, meet other mothers, and ask questions. Topics include: Breastfeeding, Pumping, Back to Work, Baby Wearing, Travel with Baby and more. There is a baby scale available for mom’s use. Mom & Baby Group meets weekly, Fridays 12-1:30 pm at Sibley Hospital, Building A, Conference Room 5, 2nd Floor. This group is open to mothers, babies, and female support people that mother has invited; you may wish to bring a lunch.

Parents LAB—Parents Learning About Babies
This is a FREE educational and social group for the non-birthing parent. Often overlooked in the post-partum year, the non-birthing partner has questions and needs support as they develop in their new role as parent. This group is facilitated by the Sibley Childbirth Education Department and will cover various topics like Soothing Your Newborn, How to Support Your Breastfeeding Family, and Baby Wearing, and more. Group meets weekly, Fridays 12-1:30 pm in the Sibley Innovation HUB. The HUB is on the first floor of Building C, enter through the Meditation Garden. Participants are invited to come with or without baby and may wish to bring a lunch.

Parties for Parents and Babies
Several times a year, Mom & Baby Group will meet together with Parents LAB for parties. Celebrate milestones in baby’s first year by making a footprint card for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and more!

Maternity Tours
Registration is per couple. You only need to register once. Complimentary maternity tours are designed to help expecting couples plan for birth of their baby at Sibley Memorial Hospital. On this tour you will have the opportunity to see a labor, delivery and recovery (LDR) room as well as a postpartum room (availability permitting) and acquire information and handouts to simplify your stay in the hospital. Registration is required; walk-ins cannot be accommodated.

Siblings Tour
The Siblings Tour is a brief tour of our Family-Centered Care Unit designed for children ages two to six years whose family is registered for delivery at Sibley. Tours are on weekends at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. with activities after the tour. Registration is required. Your child will take a peek into our nursery and be presented with an activity packet. Guardians will receive handouts to support a gentle transition to the role of older sibling. We may visit a postpartum room, availability permitting.
