Sibley Memorial Hospital Receives Awards for Stroke Program

Release Date: May 23, 2018
American Heart Association Gold Plus Award

Sibley Memorial Hospital’s stroke program has again received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite. The awards recognize Sibley’s commitment to providing the most appropriate stroke treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

Sibley, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients also receive education on managing their health and get a follow-up visit scheduled, along with other care transition interventions.

To qualify for the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. If given intravenously in the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms, tPA has been shown to significantly reduce the effects of stroke and lessen the chance of permanent disability.

“Sibley is proud to have received this important designation from the American Hospital

Association for the past six years. It recognizes our stroke team’s commitment to providing the highest levels of care to our stroke patients and our adherence to nationally accepted standards and recommendations,” said Jason Freeman, M.D., medical director of Sibley’s Stroke Center.
