Sibley Memorial Hospital Ranked Top Performer in the Human Rights Campaign’s Healthcare Equality Index

Release Date: March 31, 2017

Sibley Memorial Hospital has been designated a “2017 Top Performer” by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC), the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization. Sibley is the only hospital in Washington, D.C. to receive “Top Performer” designation.

According to the HRC, a record 590 health care facilities actively participated in the 2017 Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) survey. Of these, only 144 facilities earned a “Top Performer” designation, awarded to facilities that score between 80 and 95 points.

“At Sibley, we are committed to providing a welcoming and sensitive environment for all of our patients and visitors, including those from the LGBTQ community,” said Richard “Chip” Davis, Ph.D., president and CEO of Sibley Memorial Hospital. “Beyond our philosophy of equality for all, we have created specific programs and initiatives to better serve the LGBTQ community such as establishing a LGBTQ nurse navigator position and providing LBGTQ educational resources and training to our employees. We also maintain a very active and engaged Sibley LGBTQ Committee, with community participation, to identify and address the specific and unique health care needs of the members of this important community and develop programs to better serve them.”

"For the past decade, the HEI has been the roadmap to closing the gap in equal care for LGBTQ patients and their families, and we urge every health care facility to join us in this continuing effort to provide inclusive care to all," according to HRC President Chad Griffin. "The 590 participants in this year’s HEI continue this march in partnership with the LGBTQ community."

For the first time, this year’s HEI participants were awarded numerical scores for their implementation of LGBTQ-inclusive policies and practices in four areas: LGBTQ patient-centered care, LGBTQ patient services and support, fully-inclusive employee benefits and policies and LGBTQ patient and community engagement. Based on its performance in these categories, Sibley Memorial Hospital scored 90 points.
