Pediatric Residency Conferences

Noon conferences take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Conferences on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are dedicated to core pediatric topics.

  • Conferences include the monthly Department of Pediatrics Morbidity and Mortality Conference. The Morbidity and Mortality Conference is focused on systems issues that result in or could result in patient harm. Multiple disciplines within the Children’s Center participate.
  • The Barton Childs Patient Care Conference includes presentation of a patient by the intern who cared for that patient, followed by active discussion about the diagnosis and treatment plans. Participation in this conference includes multiple fellows, faculty and staff who were involved in the care of this patient.
  • All conferences, except the Morbidity and Mortality conferences, are recorded so residents and faculty can review at their convenience.

Grand Rounds takes place every Monday at noon from September through June, with biweekly conferences during the summer. Each Grand Rounds is preceded by a 15-minute Grand Rounds Warm-Up presented by a PL-2 resident. The resident selects a medically related topic that is relevant or interesting to them. Grand Rounds presenters include Johns Hopkins faculty in addition to invited national and international experts. These conferences are also recorded.

Combined team morning report takes place two mornings a week, (Tuesday and Thursday) from 7:30-8:30 a.m. One day is focused on Emergency Department or Subspecialty management, and the other day is focused on cases from the inpatient teams. Participants include residents who are on the general pediatric inpatient service and oncology night teams, as well as residents who have worked in the pediatric emergency department overnight. Attendings from inpatient teams and the Pediatric Emergency Department also attend. This forum, facilitated by the chief residents, promotes discussion and management decision review of patients admitted the prior night.

Intern morning report takes place once a week on Monday, and senior morning report takes place twice a week on Wednesday and Friday.

Rotation specific didactics is a core curriculum that has been developed for each rotation. This curriculum addresses the rotation’s unique aspects and addresses the ACGME core competencies. Core didactics have been designed for each block rotation. A team journal club takes place during the general pediatric inpatient rotations, St. Agnes rotation, the Harriet Lane Clinic acute care rotation, and several subspecialty rotations.
