Lakshmi Santhanam Lab
Investigators in the Lakshmi Santhanam Lab examine the fundamental mechanisms behind cardiovasc...ular disease. They are particularly interested in better understanding how nitric oxide-mediated S-nitrosylation (a post-translational protein modification) impacts protein function and trafficking in the vasculature as well as how this relationship influences matrix remodeling and vascular stiffening. view more
Research Areas: vasculature trafficking, protein trafficking, S-nitrosation, protein function, nitric oxide, matrix remodeling, vascular stiffness, cardiovascular diseases -
Larissa Shimoda Lab
Research in the Larissa Shimoda Lab focuses on several important topics within pulmonary and cr...itical care medicine. We primarily study pulmonary arterial responses to chronic hypoxia as well as hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction and oxidant-mediated lung injury. Our recent research has included investigating the effects of chronic hypoxia on pulmonary circulation and the ways in which hypoxia-inducible factors impact pulmonary vascular responses to hypoxia. We have also studied vascular remodeling in patients with pulmonary hypertension. view more
Research Areas: critical care medicine, lung injury, pulmonary medicine, lung disease, hypoxia -
Laura Hummers Lab
Lab WebsiteThe Laura Hummers Lab participates in a number of clinical trials and clinical investigations a...t the Scleroderma Center at Johns Hopkins. We have a particular interest in the predictors of outcomes in scleroderma. We’ve established a prospective cohort of 300 scleroderma patients to identify incident vascular outcomes in the hopes of identifying new biomarkers for disease development and progression. view more

Lewis Romer Lab
Lab WebsiteWork in the Lewis Romer Lab focuses on the responses of vascular systems to disease and injury.... Using cultured human endothelial cells and fibroblasts from mice that lack expression of the FAK- or Src-family kinases, we’re exploring several topics. These include the effect of inflammatory cytokine on cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix; the role of FAK signaling in inhibiting apoptosis; and the function of FAK- and Src-family kinases in cell-matrix interactions during adhesion and motility. view more

Lima Lab
Lab WebsiteThe Lima Lab’s research is concentrated on the development and application of imaging and techn...ology to address scientific and clinical problems involving the heart and vascular system.
Research Areas: magnetic resonance, cerebrovascular, imaging, cardiovascular, cardiology, atherosclerosis, computed tomography, vascular, myocardial infarction
Specifically, our research is focused on developing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast techniques to investigate microvascular function in patients and experimental animals with myocardial infarction; functional reserve secondary to dobutamine stimulation and myocardial viability assessed by sodium imaging; and cardiac MRI and computed tomography (CT) program development of techniques to characterize atherosclerosis in humans with cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease.
Current projects include:
• The Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study
• The MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis) Study
• The Coronary Artery Evaluation using 64-row Multidetector Computed Tomography Angiography (CORE64) Study

Mahendra Damarla Lab
Work in the Mahendra Damarla Lab focuses primarily on the field of vascular biology. Much of ou...r research involves exploring alternatives to mechanical ventilation as a therapy for acute lung injury. We investigate mitogen-activated protein kinase-activated protein kinase 2 as a method to mediate apoptosis during lung vascular permeability by regulating movement of cleaved caspase 3. We have also conducted research on the prevalence of confirmatory tests in patients hospitalized with congestive heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). view more

Mark Liu Lab
Research in the Mark Liu Lab explores several areas of pulmonary and respiratory medicine. Our ...studies primarily deal with allergic inflammation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, specifically immunologic responses to asthma. We have worked to develop a microfluidic device with integrated ratiometric oxygen sensors to enable long-term control and monitoring of both chronic and cyclical hypoxia. In addition, we conduct research on topics such as the use of magnetic resonance angiography in evaluating intracranial vascular lesions and tumors as well as treatment of osteoporosis by deep sea water through bone regeneration. view more

Mary Beth Brady Lab
Lab WebsiteResearch in the Mary Beth Brady Lab focuses primarily on topics within the fields of anesthesio...logy, imaging and cardiology. Our work has explored transesophageal echocardiography simulation, echocardiography, cardiac and vascular-thoracic anesthesiology, and other areas within critical care medicine. A recent study involved obtaining 3-D images of the heart, which were then used to build computer programs to help cardiac surgeons improve their treatment of heart defects. view more

Nicholas Flavahan Lab
Lab WebsiteThe Nicholas Flavahan Lab primarily researches the cellular interactions and subcellular signal...ing pathways that control normal vascular function and regulate the initiation of vascular disease. We use biochemical and molecular analyses of cellular mediators and cell signaling mechanisms in cultured vascular cells, while also conducting physiological assessments and fluorescent microscopic imaging of signaling systems in isolated blood vessels. A major component of our research involves aterioles, tiny blood vessles that are responsible for controlling the peripheral resistance of the cardiovascular system, which help determine organ blood flow. view more

Peter Abadir Lab
Research in the Peter Abadir Lab focuses on the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), a signaling pat...hway that regulates blood pressure and has been linked independently to both aging and inflammation. We’re particularly interested in changes in RAS that occur with aging. We also study signal transduction and the role of the crosstalk between angiotensin II receptor in aging and are interested in understanding the function of angiotensin II in the process of vascular aging. view more
