  • Erica Johnson Lab

    Research in the Erica Johnson Lab investigates infection control in military deployment environments as well as infections that are associated with combat trauma. We explore topics such as HIV outcomes, gender-based health issues and disparities in care.

  • Fuchs Laboratory

    The Fuchs Laboratory uses cellular electrophysiology, immunolabeling and electron microscopy to study synaptic connections between sensory hair cells and neurons in the cochlea. One effort focuses on an unusual cholinergic receptor that mediates efferent inhibition of hair cells, driving discovery of the molecular mechanisms, and offering a target for protection against acoustic trauma. A second topic concerns the small number of unmyelinated "type II" afferent neurons whose synaptic connectivity and response properties argue for a role as the pathway for noxious (too loud) sound. Our studies are motivated by curiosity about fundamental mechanisms, and to provide a foundation for understanding cochlear pathogenesis.

  • Ocular Motor Physiology Laboratory

    Our research is directed toward how the brain controls the movements of the eyes (including eye movements induced by head motion) using studies in normal human beings, patients and experimental animals. The focus is on mechanisms underlying adaptive ocular motor control. More specifically, what are mechanisms by which the brain learns to cope with the changes associated with normal development and aging as well as the damage associated with disease and trauma? How does the brain keep its eye movement reflexes properly calibrated? Our research strategy is to make accurate, quantitative measures of eye movements in response to precisely controlled stimuli and then use the analytical techniques of the control systems engineer to interpret the findings.

    Research areas: 1) learning and compensation for vestibular disturbances that occur either within the labyrinth or more centrally within the brain, 2) the mechanisms by which the brain maintains correct alignment of the eyes to prevent d...iplopia and strabismus, and 3) the role of ocular proprioception in localizing objects in space for accurate eye-hand coordination.

  • Rebecca Riggs Lab

    Research in the Rebecca Riggs Lab focuses on developing safer, less-invasive ways to detect traumatic brain injury and abusive head trauma. We are exploring the use of bedside ophthalmic ultrasonography to find retinal lesions associated with abusive head trauma, as well as investigating the use of other types of sonography to monitor intracranial hypertension. Such tools would be safer than current methods, which are often invasive or emit high levels of radiation. Additionally, portable monitors could be used outside of the hospital, in settings such as football games, to better and more quickly diagnose concussions.

  • Robert Stevens Lab

    The Robert Stevens Lab seeks to generate a comprehensive anatomical and functional map of neural injury and repair following incidents such as trauma, stroke, anoxia and sepsis. Several projects have evaluated the relationship between critical illness and central or peripheral nervous system dysfunction. Ongoing projects deploy quantitative brain mapping to probe recovery of consciousness and cognitive function in patients who have experienced acute neurologic insults from trauma, stroke, cardiac arrest and sepsis.

  • William Weiss Lab

    The William Weiss Lab studies the monitoring, assessment and evaluation of international health care programs, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Our research uses health informatics, rapid-assessment methods, mobile health applications and surveillance systems to investigate the access to health care—in particular mental health services—in populations experiencing trauma due to violence and natural disaster. Study populations include Syrian refugee children in Jordan, survivors of torture and militant attacks in Southern Iraq and survivors of natural disasters such as the Pakistan floods, the Haiti earthquake and the Indonesian tsunami.
