  • Kayode Williams Lab

    The Kayode Williams Lab conducts translational research on neuromodulation. We primarily examine the mechanisms and efficacy of spinal cord stimulation in treating neuropathic pain, peripheral neuropathies and peripheral vascular disease. Our clinical trials explore spinal cord stimulation in the treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy and the treatment of critical non-reconstructible critical leg ischemia. We also have a longstanding interest in the business of medicine and seek to enhance value propositions for hospitals and physician groups through more effective management of resources.

  • Michael Erdek Lab

    Work in the Michael Erdek Lab explores interventional pain management and cancer pain management. Our studies focus on the assessment and interventional treatment of cancer-related pain and intrathecal therapy for spasticity resistant to management by oral medications. We also conduct research on the use of spinal cord stimulation as a treatment for neuropathic pain, refractory angina pectoris and refractory peripheral vascular disease.

  • Neurosurgery Spine Research Lab

    The Spinal Research Laboratory is the leading research laboratory in the world dedicated to animal models of spinal conditions. Using novel models and techniques, Dr Sciubba and his collaborators have been able to create new ways to study tumors of the spinal cord and spinal column, spinal paralysis, and spinal fusion physiology. In addition, they consistently test certain spinal devices for effectiveness in the spine. Led by Dr Daniel Sciubba, this laboratory has received annual funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and various foundations including: American Association of neurological Surgeons (AANS), Congress of neurological Surgeons (CNS), North American Spine Society (NASS), AOSpine, neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF), and the AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves.   • Paul Christo Lab

    Work in the Paul Jordan Christo Lab is focused on pain management in older adults, thoracic outlet syndrome therapies, spinal chord stimulation and the usage of online education modules for pain education. Recent research has investigated novel therapies for thoracic outlet syndrome (including the use of botulinum toxin), the sexual side effects of chronic opioid therapy and complex regional pain syndrome.

  • Shanthini Sockanathan Laboratory

    The Shanthini Sockanathan Laboratory uses the developing spinal cord as our major paradigm to define the mechanisms that maintain an undifferentiated progenitor state and the molecular pathways that trigger their differentiation into neurons and glia. The major focus of the lab is the study of a new family of six-transmembrane proteins (6-TM GDEs) that play key roles in regulating neuronal and glial differentiation in the spinal cord. We recently discovered that the 6-TM GDEs release GPI-anchored proteins from the cell surface through cleavage of the GPI-anchor. This discovery identifies 6-TM GDEs as the first vertebrate membrane bound GPI-cleaving enzymes that work at the cell surface to regulate GPI-anchored protein function. Current work in the lab involves defining how the 6-TM GDEs regulate cellular signaling events that control neuronal and glial differentiation and function, with a major focus on how GDE dysfunction relates to the onset and progression of disease.   • Sivanesan Neuromodulation Laboratory (SNL)

    Work in the Sivanesan Neuromodulation Laboratory (SNL) focuses on developing electrical stimulation therapies for treating neuropathic pain conditions and discovering novel applications for patients suffering from painful conditions. We study mechanisms of all modalities of spinal cord stimulation in the laboratory and aim to rapidly translate these discoveries to patient care. This bench to bedside approach facilitates a unique integration of the latest science with the clinical care of patients.

  • Srinivasa Raja Lab

    Work in the Srinivasa Raja Lab seeks to better understand both the peripheral and central mechanisms that cause neuropathic pain, including various methods for treatment. A large focus of our research is on exploring the role of opioid and adrenergic receptor mechanisms in the management of chronic neuropathic pain. Our team also studies the mechanisms of spinal cord stimulation for treating chronic pain, and we have conducted controlled clinical trials in an effort to improve evidence-based practices for pharmacological treatment of neuropathic pain.

  • Zhou Lab

    In the Zhou Lab, the overall goal of our research is to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying development of the mammalian nervous system. Specifically, we are interested in understanding how neurons generate their complex morphology and form proper circuitries during development and how neurons regenerate to restore connections after brain or spinal cord injuries.
