  • Center for Point of Care Tests for Sexually Transmitted Diseases

    The mission of the Center for Point-of-Care Tests for Sexually Transmitted Diseases is to create and test unique methods for the diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases, including the home delivery of over-the-counter (OTC) tests to end-users via the Internet. Additionally, we develop novel approaches for measuring acceptability and accuracy of point-of-care and OTC-type assays in primary care settings with comparisons between trained and untrained users.

  • Claire Snyder Lab

    Researchers in the Claire Snyder Lab study the quality of cancer care, with a special focus on two areas: the quality of life for cancer patients undergoing treatment and the coordination of care between cancer specialists and primary care providers. As part of our quality-of-life research, we're investigating the use of patient-reported outcome questionnaires in routine oncology practice as well as developing a website for collecting the questionnaires and linking them with the electronic medical record. As part of our cancer-survivorship research, we've conducted large database studies to identify the physician specialties involved in the care of cancer survivors and to determine how that relates to survivors receiving recommended follow-up care. We're also working with investigators in the Sydney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center to develop care strategies for breast cancer survivors.

  • Hanan Aboumatar Lab

    Research in the Hanan Aboumatar Lab focuses on advancing patient-centered outcomes through improved patient and family involvement.   • Joseph Gallo Lab

    Research in the Joseph Gallo Lab focuses on the form and course of depression in older adults; treatment in primary care settings; the use of mixed methods in health services research; and the epidemiology of psychiatric disorders in the population. Using NIMH Epidemiologic Catchment Area survey data, we have conducted studies using novel statistical modeling (the MIMIC model) to explore how depression presents differently among older adults versus younger people. We are taking part in the long-term follow-up of PROSPECT (Prevention of Suicide in Primary Care Elderly – Collaborative Trial) — a randomized study of depression management in primary care practices — and have examined mortality as an outcome in the context of medical comorbidity.

  • Mary Catherine Beach Lab

    Research in the Mary Catherine Beach Lab focuses on physician mindfulness and the patient-provider relationship and how such factors impact health care quality. Current research involves investigating the theoretical foundations of respect, as well as the impact of physician attitudes and communication on patients in the primary care setting, with a specific focus on HIV, substance abuse and sickle cell disease patients. We also explore issues such as patients’ rights, mental health parity, human subject protection, genetic discrimination, human cloning and stem cell research.

    The Nae-Yuh Wang Lab concentrates on a wide range of multicenter studies and randomized controlled trials. Recent studies have focused on pediatric cochlear implantation and longitudinal data analysis. One recent study found that partnering with primary care providers to deliver weight loss programs may promote greater participant satisfaction and weight loss. Another active study is assessing the effectiveness of promising interventions to reduce race disparities in live donor kidney transplantation.

    Work in the Raquel Greer Lab focuses primarily on health disparities in chronic kidney disease. Our most recent research explored the challenges perceived by primary care providers in educating patients about chronic kidney disease as well as physicians’ views on barriers to adequate preparation of patients for renal replacement therapy.   • Zackary Berger Lab

    The research mission of the Zackary Berger Lab is to bridge evidence-based medicine and shared decision-making in the context of patient-centered care. Lab studies investigate how to accomplish this in the common case of uncertainty, while seeking to clarify the ethics of decision-making and empirically describe how shared decision-making is and should be done.

    Zackary Berger, MD, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In addition to his work as an internist and primary care physician, Dr. Berger is an associate faculty member in the Berman Institute of Bioethics, and core faculty in the Evidence Based Practice Center as well as the Center for Health Services and Outcomes Research.
