  • Amita Gupta Lab

    Principal Investigator:
    Amita Gupta, M.D., M.H.S.
    Medicine

The Amita Gupta Lab focuses on drug trials to prevent and treat HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and other co-morbidities in adults, including pregnant women and children who reside in low-income settings. We also conduct cohort studies assessing HIV, inflammation and nutrition in international settings; TB in pregnancy; and risk factors for TB in India (CTRIUMPH). We collaborate with several faculty in the Center for TB Research, Division of Infectious Diseases and the School of Public Health.

Research Areas: global health, nutrition, infectious disease, HIV, inflammation, tuberculosis
  • Colleen Christmas Lab

    Principal Investigator:
    Colleen Christmas, M.D.
    Medicine

The Colleen Christmas Lab studies geriatric medicine, with a focus on geriatric education, interventions to reduce inappropriate nursing home citations by state surveyors, nutrition and fall prevention for geriatric patients, and perioperative geriatric care.

Research Areas: medical education, nutrition, perioperative geriatric care, fall prevention, gerontology
  • Edgar Miller Lab

    Principal Investigator:
    Edgar Miller, M.D., Ph.D.
    Medicine

Research in the Edgar Miller Lab focuses on nutrition, hypertension and kidney disease. Current projects include a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute study on dietary carbohydrate and glycemic index effects on markers of oxidative stress, inflammation and kidney function; and a National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases randomized controlled trial that examines the effects of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on urine protein excretion in diabetic kidney disease.

Research Areas: nutrition, kidney diseases, diabetes, inflammation
  • Gerard E. Mullin Lab

    Lab Website
    Principal Investigator:
    Gerard Mullin, M.D., M.S.
    Medicine

The Gerard E. Mullin Lab studies nutrition and the way that diet affects weight loss. In particular, we study how having an imbalanced gut microbiome may prevent weight loss in certain people.

Research Areas: gut bacteria, nutrition, obesity, weight loss
  • Joanna Peloquin Lab

    Principal Investigator:
    Joanna Melia, M.D.
    Medicine

The Joanna Peloquin Lab focuses on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We're working on individualized care for IBD patients through functional genomic studies, specifically those related to diet, host and microbiota interactions.

Research Areas: inflammatory bowel disease, gastroenterology, nutrition, microbiota, genomics
  • Meredith McCormack Lab

    Principal Investigator:
    Meredith McCormack, M.D., M.H.S.
    Medicine

Research in the Meredith McCormack Lab deals primarily with pulmonary diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and the role of environmental exposures in lung diseases. We have researched the factors that contribute to inner-city asthma, with a focus on how particulate matter air pollution impacts pulmonary function. We are also part of the LIBERATE clinical study, which is focused on patients who experience difficulty breathing and have been diagnosed with severe emphysema. We also have a longstanding interest in the effects of race/ethnicity, poverty and urbanization on nutrition and food allergies.

Research Areas: emphysema, environmental exposure, asthma, lung disease, COPD, health disparities
  • Nadia Hansel Lab

    Principal Investigator:
    Nadia Hansel, M.D., M.P.H.
    Medicine

Research in the Nadia Hansel Lab investigates the clinical, pathophysiologic and public health aspects of pulmonary diseases, with a focus on asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We have explored how environmental exposures, nutrition and diet, comorbidity and other factors influence the outcomes of diseases such as asthma and COPD.

Research Areas: airway diseases, immunology, asthma, allergies, lung disease, COPD
  • William Checkley Lab

    Lab Website
    Principal Investigator:
    William Checkley, M.D., Ph.D.
    Medicine

Research in the William Checkley Lab explores the field of lung health, with an emphasis on the epidemiology of obstructive lung diseases as well as acute lung injury and mechanical ventilation. We also explore the interactions between nutrition and infection, and the impact of environmental exposures to health.

Research Areas: critical care medicine, epidemiology, international lung health, mechanical ventilation, acute lung injury, lung disease
