Amit Pahwa Lab
The Amit Pahwa Lab conducts research on a variety of topics within internal medicine. Our most ...recent studies have explored misanalysis of urinalysis results, urinary fractional excretion indices in the evaluation of acute kidney injury and nocturnal enuresis as a risk factor for falls in older women. We also investigate cancer diagnostics and treatments. In this area, our recent research has included studying cutaneous shave biopsies for diagnosing primary colonic adenocarcinoma as well as growth inhibition and apoptosis in human brain tumor cell lines using selenium. view more

Brent Petty Lab
Lab WebsiteDr. Petty's laboratory interests focuses on antimicrobial chemotherapy, hospital-based medical ...practices, and internal medicine collaboration with ophthalmologic clinical trials. view more

Janet Record Lab
Research in the Janet Record Lab focuses on medical education and patient-centered care. We’re ...currently developing a curriculum for internal medicine residents in the inpatient general medicine service setting. The curriculum teaches residents to use hand-carried ultrasound for imaging the inferior vena cava to assess volume status. view more

Natasha Chida Lab
The Natasha Chida Lab investigates methods for using education and curriculum development to im...prove patient outcomes worldwide, primarily by optimizing education of physicians-in-training. Most recently, our team has worked to develop and evaluate an assessment tool for evaluating internal medicine residents’ understanding of tuberculosis diagnostics. Previous research includes a retrospective cohort study on the high proportion of extrapulmonary TB in a low-prevalence setting as well as an analysis of ways to define clinical excellence in adult infectious disease practice. view more

Stephen Sisson Lab
Lab WebsiteThe Stephen Sisson Lab focuses on medical education, community outreach and ambulatory care. We... recently demonstrated concurrent validity between performance on an ambulatory curriculum, the Internal Medicine In-Training Examination (IM-ITE) and the American Board of Internal Medicine Certifying Examination (ABIM-CE). view more

Timothy Niessen Lab
The Timothy Niessen Lab studies patient outcomes in the ICU. We are particularly interested in ...the effects of sleep quality, delirium transitions and sedation on the improvement of intensive care patients. Our investigators also focus on the practices of internal medicine interns, studying the variability of hand washing hygiene, etiquette-based communication and time spent in direct and indirect patient care. We have also studied the onset of myelopathy as a result of B12 deficiency from long-term colchicine treatment and recreational nitrous oxide use. view more

Zackary Berger Lab
The research mission of the Zackary Berger Lab is to bridge evidence-based medicine and shared ...decision-making in the context of patient-centered care. Lab studies investigate how to accomplish this in the common case of uncertainty, while seeking to clarify the ethics of decision-making and empirically describe how shared decision-making is and should be done.
Research Areas: epidemiology, patient-centered health care, evidence-based medicine, bioethics
Zackary Berger, MD, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In addition to his work as an internist and primary care physician, Dr. Berger is an associate faculty member in the Berman Institute of Bioethics, and core faculty in the Evidence Based Practice Center as well as the Center for Health Services and Outcomes Research. view more
