  • Alfredo Kirkwood Laboratory

    Research in the Alfredo Kirkwood Laboratory is directed toward elucidating the basic mechanisms by which visual experience can modify cortical connections in the visual cortex and how those mechanisms are regulated.

    In visual cortical slices, we investigate two forms of activity-dependent synaptic plasticity: long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). These two forms of synaptic plasticity are currently the most comprehensive models of the elementary mechanisms underlying naturally occurring plasticity. We are currently focused on how synaptic inhibition and the action of neuromodulators regulate the induction of LTP and LTD during development. We hope to gain a better understanding of how naturally occurring plasticity is regulated.

  • Bakker Memory Lab

    Research in the Bakker Memory Laboratory is focused on understanding the mechanisms and brain networks underlying human cognition with a specific focus on the mechanisms underlying learning and memory and the changes in memory that occur with aging and disease. We use a variety of techniques including neuropsychological assessments, experimental behavioral assessments and particularly advanced neuroimaging methods to study these questions in young and older adults and patients with mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy.

    Through our collaborations with investigators in both basic science and clinical departments, including the departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Psychological and Brain Sciences, Neurology and Public Health, our research also focuses on brain systems involved in spatial navigation and decision-making as well as cognitive impairment in neuropsychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia, eating disorders, obsessiv...e-compulsive disorders, depression and anxiety. view less

  • Cohen Lab

    The Cohen Lab studies neural circuits underlying reward, mood and decision making. We seek to understand how neural circuits control fundamental mammalian behaviors. Many disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, drug addiction and Parkinson's disease, appear to involve dysfunction of monoaminergic signaling. Using cell-type-specific tools and well-controlled behavioral tasks in mice, we aim to understand the function of monoaminergic circuits in behavior. We hope these basic discoveries will lead to an understanding of the biology of the brain and better treatments for disorders of the brain.

  • Daniel Ford Lab

    Research in the Daniel Ford Lab seeks to understand the relationships between depression and various chronic medical conditions. Recently, we've focused on depression and coronary artery disease as well as tactics for improving care for patients with medical comorbidity. Our research was among the first to document depression as a risk factor for myocardial infarction and stroke. Our team is also interested in exploring how information technology can be used to improve the care of patients with depression and tobacco abuse.

  • Joseph Gallo Lab

    Research in the Joseph Gallo Lab focuses on the form and course of depression in older adults; treatment in primary care settings; the use of mixed methods in health services research; and the epidemiology of psychiatric disorders in the population. Using NIMH Epidemiologic Catchment Area survey data, we have conducted studies using novel statistical modeling (the MIMIC model) to explore how depression presents differently among older adults versus younger people. We are taking part in the long-term follow-up of PROSPECT (Prevention of Suicide in Primary Care Elderly – Collaborative Trial) — a randomized study of depression management in primary care practices — and have examined mortality as an outcome in the context of medical comorbidity.

  • Kimberly Skarupski Lab

    Research in the Kimberly Skarupski Lab focuses on depression, geriatric medicine, psychiatry and the behavioral sciences. Recent studies have investigated various aspects of cognitive decline in biracial older adult and urban older adult community-based populations. Additional studies have investigated depression symptoms, disability and worship practices in older adults, with particular attention to racial disparities in these areas.

  • Laura Gitlin Lab

    Research in the Laura Gitlin Lab focuses on aging in place, family caregiving, nonpharmacologic approaches to dementia care and functional disability. We study quality-of-life improvements for people with dementia or functional difficulties and their caregivers, including adaptive aids such as assistive devices and environmental modifications. Other research investigates disparities in mental health in older African Americans undergoing treatment for depression.

  • Lisa Cooper Lab

    The Lisa Cooper Lab is dedicated to researching patient-centered interventions for improving health outcomes and overcoming racial and ethnic disparities in health care. Our primary focus is on the factors of physician communication skills and cultural competence training, patient shared decision-making and self-management skills training. Recently, we have explored patient-centered depression care for African Americans, tactics for improving patient-physician communication about management of hypertension, and reducing ethnic and social disparities in health. In addition, we are currently researching racial disparities in cardiovascular health outcomes for patients living in Baltimore.

  • Platelet Physiology Research Lab

    Dr. Williams' research focuses on platelet physiology particularly as it relates to acute coronary syndromes and depression. Her laboratory specifically examines platelet aggregation, flow cytometric analysis to measure platelet activation, platelet luminescence as a measure of the platelet release reaction, many Elisa preparations in order to measure platelet function, platelet genotyping to determine the presence of certain platelet polymorphisms, and various other assays to distinguish mechanisms of platelet dysfunction. The goal for her cardiovascular platelet laboratory is to identify the etiology of platelet dysfunction in many disease states and apply methods that may improve this dysfunction that can eventually be translated to therapies for patients with cardiovascular disease. Scientific techniques performed in the lab include: flow cytometric analysis, platelet microparticle identification, and protein immunoprecipitation among other techniques.

  • The Marsh Lab

    Dr. Elisabeth Marsh is the Medical Director of Bayview Medical Center's Stroke Program and, along with Dr. Rafael Llinas, runs the Bayview Stroke Intervention Clinic (BaSIC). BaSIC is both a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic and a clinical research environment focused on stroke outcomes and identifying critical gaps in the knowledge of stroke treatment and recovery. Our long-term goal is to enhance post-stroke care by improving both symptomatic recovery and patient-centered outcomes. We are currently investigating factors related to cognitive decline post-stroke, and the influence of post-stroke depression, fatigue, and persistent symptoms on long-term recovery and quality of life for both patients and their families. Clinical trials explore the use of magnetoencephalography (MEG) to assess cognitive difficulties in previously high-functioning individuals after stroke and optimal therapy and treatment monitoring for patients with reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome.
