The eRadiology Center offers physicians an array of services to assist with imaging needs. Our dedicated staff are here to serve you Monday through Friday, 24 hours as well as Saturday through Sunday, 12am – 7:30am & 6:30pm – 11:59pm. Johns Hopkins Providers
Our staff members at the eRadiology Center have extensive knowledge and experience in timely processing of images and reports to serve the Johns Hopkins medical community.
For second opinion services, our team uses image-sharing software, giving physicians the ability to upload studies electronically and eliminating the need to drop off the images on CD at the eRadiology Center.
Requests can be made to store outside studies in the Johns Hopkins Image Archive with or without an interpretation by a Johns Hopkins radiologist. The interpretation service should be reserved for challenging cases or new patients with outside imaging. We do not interpret studies that are older than 12 months.

- Referring physicians must complete an Epic order. Options in the order are to archive or to request a second opinion interpretation. For interpretation, provide diagnosis or symptoms and signs. Whenever possible, the outside report should be submitted.
- For second opinion interpretation, the requesting provider is responsible for notifying the patient that a fee may be charged. Archive without interpretation does not require a fee.
- Johns Hopkins Radiology does not provide second opinions on studies that are older than a study that has already been interpreted. If a comparison is required, contact the radiologist to place an addendum.
- If your study does not meet the criteria for second opinion interpretation, your image will be archived and an email will be sent.
- Images can be submitted to Johns Hopkins Image Sharing. Image Sharing is a secure website that allows physicians to upload studies for temporary viewing. When Image Sharing is used in conjunction with an appropriate prescribed Epic order, the study will be interpreted and made part of the permanent archive.
Images can also be submitted directly to the eRadiology Center via CD, DVD or film. Electronic submissions should be in standard DICOM format to assure timely and accurate transfer to the archive. The eRadiology Center will dispose of any CD, DVD or film not retrieved within 14 days of processing.

Sharing images and reports from outside institutions with Johns Hopkins physicians has never been easier.
Image Sharing is a service provided by the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences that was implemented to support patients seeking care from a Johns Hopkins physician in any department. This service eliminates the use of CDs when viewing and sharing studies within the Johns Hopkins enterprise.
- Upload studies: Providers or patients can upload medical images and reports using any computer with Internet access.
- Share studies: Studies can be electronically shared among physicians and all Johns Hopkins Health System affiliate institutions.
- View studies: Medical images can be viewed via our clinical viewer.
- Download studies: Studies can be downloaded for short-term use during an appointment or added to the Johns Hopkins long-term archive for permanent storage.

Providers Outside Johns Hopkins
A Johns Hopkins radiologist will interpret the images and write a detailed report within 24 hours of the exam. Results will be sent directly to your office. If you have any questions for the eRadiology Center, please call 443-287-7378.

To submit an inpatient, outpatient or emergency department second opinion request, the referring physician will need to complete an Epic order.
In Epic, use “IMG9500 JHH Second Opinion” for all modality with exception of breast imaging, use "IMG8039 Breast JHH Second Opinion". It is important that, whenever possible, the outside radiology report be provided so that our radiologist can note any discrepancies.

- For new patients, we can interpret up to 1 study of the same modality and body part (these patients have no imaging on PACS).

Yes, the charge is needed to offset the necessary interpretation, staffing and equipment expenses incurred to provide the service. There is a reduced professional fee for this service that typically ranges from $30 to $300 depending upon the complexity of the exam. For complex exams like PET scans the cost can be up to $900. Some insurers pay for this service and we will try to collect from a patient’s insurer first. Providers and patients should be aware that patients will be billed if the charge is denied by insurance.
The requesting physician shall inform the patient that their insurance will be billed for outside consultations and that they may receive a bill for the interpretation if their insurance denies reimbursement for the service.

Images can be submitted by disc at either of our locations or by uploading at Johns Hopkins Image Sharing. Johns Hopkins Image Sharing is a secure website that enables users to conveniently submit images electronically to the eRadiology Center eliminating the need to physically bring a disc to one of our locations. Once images have been uploaded, the disc can be returned to the patient right away. We encourage the use of electronic submission whenever possible.

The eRadiology Center will send an email notification to the provider when images are available for viewing.
We will notify the submitter by email that the disc is ready for retrieval. It is the responsibility of the submitter to pick up the disc. If the disc is not retrieved within two weeks, it will be destroyed.
