In the transition to high-value practice imaging exams have been identified as contributors to unnecessary practice and patient health care debt. Improving imaging appropriateness requires collaboration across specialties, educational campaigns, radiology consultation services and clinical decision support in the electronic medical record. At the core of these initiatives are the ACR Appropriateness Criteria® (AC), evidence-based guidelines that indicate the relative utility of various imaging tests for more than 1,000 clinical indications.

To increase providers’ knowledge about imaging appropriateness guidelines, subspecialty trained faculty leaders in the Johns Hopkins Department of Radiology will deliver a targeted educational program. The content of this program was driven by a survey of ordering providers, designed to identify clinical scenarios for which they needed imaging selection guidance. Survey responses identified 14 common clinical indications where providers reported knowledge deficiencies, which were integrated into this half-day CME program.

The Order Wisely program includes 25 targeted sessions on high value ordering and prescribing to avoid low value care, including appropriate imaging for the 8 CMS Priority Clinical Areas. In January 2020, CMS will assess all ordering providers for appropriate use of advanced imaging in these 8 areas, and outliers will be required to obtain preauthorization for imaging. As such, we want to ensure that our medical providers are knowledgable about best imaging practice.

Who Should Attend?

This activity is intended for physician and non-physician medical providers who order imaging exams in all specialties including faculty, house staff, medical students, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

Objectives

After participating in this program, medical providers will gain understanding in:

  • Appropriate exam selection for a range of common clinical indications
  • Screening recommendations to improve early detection
  • Resources available to guide imaging appropriateness

Accreditation Statement

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

MOC Statement

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 5 points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME’s Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS) for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

Credit Designation Statement

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Other Credits

American Academy of Nurse Practitioners National Certification Program accepts AMA PRA Category 1 credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME.

American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME. Physicians assistants may receive a maximum of 5.0 AAPA Category 1 CME credits for completing this course.
