P-STAR Program Activities

Psychiatry Summer Training and Research Program (P-STAR)

As part of P-STAR program, each student is assigned a lab supervisor within the various labs of the P50 Conte Center projects [Conte Center Projects]. Under the guidance of their supervisors, students contribute to individualized projects within their particular labs.

While students will be expected to report to lab each day to conduct their individualized projects, to get the full bench to bedside experience, students will also participate in interactive meetings and discussions with physicians and researchers. Below are some highlights:

  1. Facility Tours: Facility tours are an opportunity for students to observe active operations and/or services provided by sites within the larger Hopkins organization.  During each tour, students enjoy a presentation by one of the facility faculty or staff members and learn about the type of work being performed and managed daily by the facility.
  2. Lunch N’ Learns: Lunch N' Learns provide a unique opportunity to meet with individuals who are directly involved with patients and their families. During these meetings, hosts discuss their professional career paths, experiences in the clinical setting, and answer students’ questions regarding treatment and patient care.
  3. Journal Club Meetings: We ask one student per week to pick a journal article to present at a weekly meeting through a Power Point presentation.  Research and presentation are prepared under the guidance of the student’s lab supervisor. Meetings are held over lunch.
  4. Clinical Rounds: Students have the rare chance to shadow physicians working on the Johns Hopkins Hospital Psychiatry inpatient and outpatient units. This experience is designed to introduce students to the practice of Psychiatric Care at Johns Hopkins. Students are assigned to various adult/adolescent psychiatric units, depending on availability.
  5. Teaching Rounds: Students also participate in weekly clinical Teaching Rounds. Teaching Rounds provide an in-depth exposure to diagnosis and treatment of individual patients on the Schizophrenia and Mood Disorder Units. Teaching Rounds occur in an informal conference setting during which a physician in-training presents a patient to a senior doctor for further consult.  P-STAR students are invited to observe this unique teaching framework on a weekly basis.
  6. Final Presentation: P-STAR students present their findings and key learnings at the conclusion of the summer in a structured Power Point presentation. Students are encouraged to invite faculty and staff members who may have influenced their summer experiences to observe their presentations. Family members are also welcome to attend.
  7. Schizophrenia Annual Symposium Attendance: P-STAR students are invited to attend our annual Schizophrenia Center Symposium for a full day of lectures and presentations by world-renowned experts in the field.
  8. Hopkins C.A.R.E.S Summer Program Symposium: Students present their research findings at a poster presentation for the Career Academic and Research Experiences for Student (CARES) symposium.
  9. Night Out in Baltimore: Students are given the option to join their P-STAR peers on a night out on the town!  Past activities have includes attending an Orioles game and enjoying dinner in the Inner Harbor.
