Second Opinion Consultation service for Schizophrenia

Establishing a correct diagnosis and determining the unique strengths and vulnerabilities of each patient is central to the treatment of schizophrenia. We therefore offer outpatient evaluations that are designed to give patients, families, and their treating clinicians a comprehensive and timely opinion and set of treatment options. Most physicians and therapists greatly appreciate second opinions and will not be offended by your request for an evaluation at Johns Hopkins.

We offer half-day psychiatric diagnostic evaluations, which include review of records, a detailed interview of the patient, and an interview of family members. These consultations are ideal for questions about diagnosis, medication strategies, and non-pharmacological treatment options.

Components of the outpatient evaluation:

  • Focused record review
  • Comprehensive psychiatric interview
  • Interview of family member
  • Summary meeting with patient and family member
  • Preparation of a detailed written summary

Clinic hours: 9 am - 4 pm

Scheduling the Consultation Session

Here are the two steps to secure a consultation:

Here are the forms and documents for Step 2:

Items #1 and # 2 are essential and are required for scheduling an appointment.

In short—we need the following items:

  1. Essential: A note summarizing the clinical information and the reason for the consultation from the referring clinician.
(Click here for a copy of the Adult Schizophrenia Consultation Clinic Letter and send it to your psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, or hospital to clarify the type of records needed.)
  2. Essential: Clinic questionnaire (Word document)

These other items greatly improve the quality of the consultation. Additional information may include:

  • Recent lab results
  • Treatment summary from psychotherapist
  • Treatment summaries from previous psychiatrists/nurse practitioner/therapists
  • Admission and discharge summary from any hospitalizations (this is different than what is provided to you at the time of discharge)
  • Neuropsychological testing report
  • Head/brain imaging studies

Below are additional materials for your convenience if applicable for you:

Please submit all documents as a PDF file. Here’s a tool that may benefit you and it’s free: https://www.camscanner.com/download

Referrals

Appointments can be made without a referral from your psychiatrist, your nurse practitioner, your internist, or your psychotherapist, but we will need information from your treatment team. Please read Scheduling the Consultation Session (above) for more information on the need for written correspondence.

Approximate waiting period for an appointment is, on average, 4-8 weeks.
