Co-Occurring Disorders in Adolescence (CODA)

Early Recognition

Early recognition and treatment can be the difference between choosing a path of addiction, isolation and long-term emotional problems—or a path of wellness, meaningful relationships and emotional well being. Signs to look for in young adults affected by these issues include, but are not limited to, changes in:

  • Sleep—too much or too little, fitfull or at odd times of the day
  • Appetite—amount, times, types of food
  • Physical Health—increased or decreased en- ergy or fatigue, red eyes, or constricted or dilated pupils, runny nose, increase or decrease in weight, respiratory problems
  • Personal Hygiene—lack of or obsession with it
  • Appearance—different hairstyle, hair color, clothes or makeup
  • Friends—different social groups or socially withdrawn
  • Behavior—self-destructive or self-harming, isolated, hyper, inattentive, forgetful, dishonest, breaking rules, sexual promiscuity, lack of motivation, increased paranoia
  • Mood—extreme happiness to extreme moodiness and irritability, or suicidal thoughts
  • School or Work—grades, sports, activities, hobbies, attendance

Treatment

CODA follows an evidence-based protocol which includes, but is not limited to, motivational enhancement therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and group, individual and family therapy. In order to accommodate these various modalities and comprehensive assessments, a 16- to 20-week commitment is required. The program protocol is:

  1. Initial intake and history
  2. Standardized psychosocial/diagnostic interview
  3. Standardized substance abuse evaluation
  4. Psychiatric evaluation
  5. Individual therapy once a week for 12 or 16 weeks
  6. Group therapy once a week for 12 or 16 weeks

Random drug screens are performed on-site. Medication management also is provided if needed. CODA does not currently provide medical detox, however, a referral can be made while continuing to receive CODA treatment.
