Why a Mood Disorders Clinic at Bayview?

Mood disorders are one of the most common causes of disability and impairment around the world and patients with mood disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder, make up the single largest group of patients seen in the Community Psychiatry Adult Outpatient Program at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. So we have assembled a comprehensive team with specific expertise and experience to provide multidisciplinary evaluation and ongoing outpatient treatment for individuals with mood disorders.

Services Offered

  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Group psychotherapy
  • Medication management
  • Family therapy
  • Research opportunities

Patients at the Bayview Mood Disorders Clinic see both a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist. The combination of psychotherapy and medications has been established to be the most effective treatment for mood disorders, and best supports lasting recovery and stability.  This collaborative model provides an advantage to patients allowing for the most effective treatment planning. The frequency of appointment with a therapist is variable depending upon need. Medication management appointments with a psychiatrist are variable as well depending upon the course of the illness and side-effect but they occur at least every 90 days. Therapy frequency varies as needed, and medication management visits as needed.  Treatment plans are developed collaboratively by patients and the treatment team.  Progress toward goals is assessed regularly in treatment and objectives are updated as needed. For those patients interested in volunteering for a Hopkins research project, a research coordinator in the clinic can facilitate their participation.
