Background

Dr. Michaels is a plastic surgeon serving the Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia areas. He also welcomes consultations from all parts of the country and internationally.

Dr. Michaels provides his patients with a full spectrum of both cosmetic and reconstructive surgical options. He is highly skilled in procedures for facial rejuvenation, breast and body contouring, and post-weight loss surgery. He also offers many minimally invasive and non-surgical treatments for these areas.

Dr. Michaels completed a total of ten years of training following medical school. He completed his prerequisite general surgery training and a plastic surgery research fellowship at New York University Medical Center. He completed his plastic surgery training at the world-renowned Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at New York University where he trained under many of the leaders in his specialty. Afterwards, Dr. Michaels was accepted into one of the few fellowships dedicated to post-weight loss body contouring. Dr. Michaels training allows him to perform the most current techniques under the safest possible conditions.

Although Dr. Michaels offers numerous procedures, he has a special interest in body contouring procedures especially following significant weight loss. Procedures offered include liposuctiontummy tuck (abdominoplasty), lower body lift with buttock auto-augmentation, circumferential body lift, extended tummy tuck, mastopexy (breast lift), breast augmentation, thigh lift, brachioplasty (arm lift), upper body lift (back lift), gynecomastia correction (male breast reshaping), buttock augmentation with fat transfer, panniculectomy, face/neck lift, blepharoplasty (eyelids), fat injections, hand rejuvenation, BOTOX®, and facial fillers.

Dr. Michaels is committed to advancing the field of plastic surgery. He is involved in the residency training of plastic surgery residents from both Johns Hopkins Hospital and Georgetown University Hospital. He has an academic appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Michaels also continues to perform both clinical and basic science research. In 2012, he was an investigator in a FDA-approved clinical trial assessing the use of a novel tissue glue to be used in patients undergoing abdominoplasty. He is the author of ten book chapters and over twenty peer-reviewed manuscripts. In 2009, Dr. Michaels was co-first author of the James Barrett Brown Award manuscript presented to the best plastic surgery-related paper published in our specialty's premier journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Michaels has been featured on CNN and Sirius Radio's Doctor Radio where he has discussed post-weight loss body contouring and answered questions from listeners. He is also on the forefront of new technology being offered in our specialty. Dr. Michaels was one of the first plastic surgeons in the United States to use the V-Loc™ suture, the latest in barbed suture technology.

Dr. Michaels was born and raised on Long Island, New York. He attended the University of Pennsylvania where he was a double major in Psychology and the Biological Basis of Behavior. Dr. Michaels attended medical school at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.
