Dr. John W. Wong is a professor of radiation oncology and molecular radiology sciences and oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Dr. Wong developed the technology that gives radiation oncologists the ability to create CT images at the same time the patient receives radiation. This novel radiotherapy device, the patented Elekta Synergy, is now used worldwide, ushering in the era of image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). He also invented the Active Breathing Coordinator.
Dr. Wong also serves as the director of the Division of Medical Physics in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences. In this role, he helps to coordinate all technical services and directly manages the department’s physics and dosimetry services to ensure the delivery of state-of-the-art methods of radiation treatment. He is also directly involved in the training program of the department. Over the years, he has been a mentor or associate advisor of over 30 doctoral candidates, medical residents, post-doctoral and medical fellows. Dr. Wong also directs the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center's Experimental Irradiator Core, which establishes dosimetry standards for radiation equipment, performs quality assurance, provides training for users and assists in the design and conduct of complex experiments.
Dr. Wong’s clinical interests include adaptive radiation therapy, motion management in radiation therapy, and image- and information-guided radiation therapy.
He earned his doctoral degree in medical biophysics at the University of Toronto. He joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2004.
Board certified with the American College of Medical Physicists, Dr. Wong is a member of the professional societies of American Association of Medical Physicists and the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology. Active in research and the development of radiotherapy technologies, he has published more than 150 academic journal articles.

Research & Publications
Dr. Wong’s clinical research focuses on developing advanced radiation-treatment techniques that more effectively eradicate tumors while minimizing radiation-induced toxicity.
Dr. Wong serves on the invention team of the Active Breathing Coordinator, which helps to manage the motion of patients breathing during radiation treatment.
He also is helping to develop a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) device with a flat-panel imager on a medical accelerator, with the goal of facilitating CT-guided radiation treatment.
Dr. Wong also is exploring the use of on-board 3-D ultrasound and CBCT as alternate ways of delivering multi-modality imaging information, such as MRI, to guide radiation treatment.
In addition, he serves as a co-principal investigator (with Drs. Todd McNutt and Theodore DeWeese) in developing the multidisciplinary, multi-institutional Oncospace informatics infrastructure. The database supports data reuse and promotes distributed data sharing for clinical research and decision making.
In the laboratory, Dr. Wong has developed a unique small-animal radiation research platform with CT-imaging capability to support the translation of pre-clinical radiation research for human treatment. The system is being enhanced to incorporate molecular-optical tomography to guide radiation and assess response.
