Background

Dr. Margaret Alexander has been specializing in the treatment of women with gynecologic cancers for more than 15 years and has developed the reputation of being an extraordinarily gifted doctor with a caring manner.

Dr. Alexander is a graduate of Yale University School of Medicine. She also completed her residency training at Yale New Haven Hospital. Dr. Alexander completed a gynecologic oncology fellowship at Georgetown University and is an Obstetrician and Gynecologist (Ob/Gyn) and a Fellow of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

A gynecologic oncologist is a physician who is an Ob/Gyn specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of women with cancer of the reproductive organs. After going to medical school for four years and then completing a four year residency program in obstetrics and gynecology, gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Alexander completed an additional three or four year fellowship specializing in cancers of the reproductive tract.

As a gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Alexander received extensive training during this time and gained surgical skills required to properly stage and remove tumors. She also received extensive training in various chemotherapy and radiation therapy techniques. This training uniquely qualifies her as gynecologic oncologist to care for women with gynecologic cancers.

Dr. Alexander was the former director of Gynecologic Oncology at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh. She has served on the faculty of Georgetown University and George Washington University. She was a guest researcher at the National Cancer Institute in the early development of the HPV vaccine for cervical cancer. Dr. Alexander has lectured nationally and internationally on gynecologic oncology with a focus on HPV, cervical cancer and vaccine development.

Dr. Alexander is the first woman gynecologic oncologist in the Washington, DC metropolitan area certified to perform da VinciRobotic assisted laparoscopic gynecologic and gyn-oncologic procedures.

As many of Dr. Alexander patients have described, the care experience with her is exemplary and stems from her heart felt commitment and compassion for each of her patients. In Dr.Alexander''s seemingly limitless compassion, she developed an annual recognition program for all of her cancer survivors to honor their strength and victory through the experiences of their disease and celebration of life.

As one patient described in her comments, "...If kind words were money, you would be worth millions..." and another, "Dr Alexander possesses special qualities as a person... her ability to relate to patients and be an empathetic listener who engages in conversation and answers questions with ease... these special qualities define her as and extraordinary physician."

As the Director of Oncology for Women, Dr. Alexander has developed a center to educate, evaluate, and eradicate gynecologic cancer. Some events sponsored by Dr. Alexander include a cancer survivor tea party a cancer survivor luncheon cruise, an office-based cancer support group, and educational seminars about gynecologic cancer and cancer prevention.
